supersqueeze
I have seen the cast hex DBs up to 120 lbs but I have never seen a larger cast DB. I was wondering if anyone out there has made a 60 lb blob from one of the hexagonal 120s? If so has it been lifted? If you are concerned about Rule #5, please feel free to answer off line. Mike M. Wade Gillingham
For what it's worth - and no I don't have a pic but could get one at anytime - I've stood a 70 pound hex dumbell on end and deadlifted it with one hand - both left and right. I did not use the indentations the numbers make to aid my grip - only gripped the smooth part. I don't know if anyone else has done this - if so I would like to hear about it. HAMMERHEAD
Wade, That is a great lift! Get the pic into the gallery. This could be the new pinch feat that sets the bar, like the blob. -HH
gazza
Excellent lift WADE,please correct me if i am wrong, have you not also lifted the blob plus extra weight attached and if so,how does the 70lbs hex on end compare.
Wade Gillingham
I've lifted a blob with 15 pounds taped to it. It was hard. The 70 pound hex is much harder than the blob but it is less dependent on having the perfect amount of oil, sweat, chalk, relative humidity, etc., etc., like the blob is. Either you are strong enough that day or not - no excuses. Wade
gazza
Wade Both super impressive lifts You are right about the sweat, humidity etc
supersqueeze
Wade, very impressive! Actually I went home last night and experimented with my hex blobs and noticed something unique about their shape and it got me wondering about your lift. I noticed that when lifting a hex blob or db by the end my hand opens up like a claw with my thumb on the side opposite (parallel) to the side gripped by both my middle and ring fingers. My pointer and pinky are then on the two sides adjacent to the side gripped by my middle and ring fingers. Therefore, I am gripping four of the six sides of the hexagon. This allows more finger contact with the blob and is slightly different than a parallel sided pinch. Still, a 70 in that fashion to a full deadlift is more than impressive. I have not measured the width of a 120 to compare it to the size of the flat end of a 70. If I get the chance I will. Mike M.
Tom of Iowa2
I'll just throw this idea out there..it'll be a several weeks before i have the money anyway.Just bought a vertical bar lift and the IM Big Block but IF I was to buy some Hex dumbells...would someone want to buy the other 'half'of the dumbell? i.e.a 120pounder would go for about 41$(new) from Jesup gym equip...100pounder would go for about $36...80pounder for $32 ....and so on. IF I was to buy them and split them in half...would anyone want the other HALF?Shipping half a DB would go UPS...as long as you are in the midwest shouldn't cost too much? Of course will shop around and try to find some Hexs used...before buying them new..... Also IF we had an actual BLOB we could-possibly- make a mold and probably get this blacksmith to pour us some blobs.......even-possibly-a hollowed Blob? which would it an adjustable blobs(ad scrap lead or lead shot) A different animal but we had a PDA'wrench'facsimile machined with just the measurements and it weighed 26.25..which was what it was designed to weigh (actually kind of light for the big boys though)We've been getting pretty creative..... Tom of Iowa2
of course that would make the cost of one half of a 120lb.dumbell(give you a 60lb.hex blob) about $20.50 plus shipping and one half of an 80lb. ..would cost about 16$....... Less $$ of course if i can find some used(good time of year to check the classified and Pawn shop...all those 'useless' christmas presents...) Guest WesMarden
I have seen heavier cast dumbells, though not hex. Only once in person though. Oddly enough it was at a big hospital associated fitness facility. I also believe that Ironsport gym in PA(i think) might have some. Plus you are all overlooking the ultimate blob. think about it, what weighs 172 pounds and has a huge globe on each side? You could cut it in half. I might just do that if I win the lottery. be a dang expensive blob. Edited January 4, 2003 by WesMarden
