barbe705
So, in the thread on the Gracie Bell Chris Rice mentioned salting the bell. I've heard of this before but, I was wondering if anybody could give instructions. Iahve 2 block weights I just stripped and I want to protect them in some way.(my basement is damp) does it have to be NaCl? is CaCl okay? how well does it have to be covered? do you need to prep in anyway? how long do you leave it covered for? Brent my personal favorite is spritzing a mixture of water, table salt and vinegar seems to work pretty well to get a nice initial rust texture that holds chalk if thats what ya'll are talking about. - Aaron
climber511
Brent - here's what I do. I use regular table salt. I spray the handle (in this case) with water - then rub the salt onto it, as much as will stick. I come back the next day, and do it again, rubbing it in well each time - maybe a couple times a day if possible. It took about a week of this and I washed it all clean - what is left is a very smooth, dark brown coating that seems to be a part of the metal (it looks like a stain actually) and is not loose or flaky like rust - it holds chalk well but doesn't develop any further rust in my on again off again cold warm gym. You don't want to do it until you start getting pits in the metal, all you need is that discoloration.
barbe705
sounds very easy. I'll let you know how it went in about a week. Brent
verdigriz
I have no room inside or a garage so all my stuff except for a few things are always exposed to the elements and my pinch blocks for example are some of themost seasoned I ahve seen, lol...not for everyone but rain and time does seem to create the same thing
barbe705
the first block weight is out of the salt and looks great. It looks like it's made of brown steel. Hopefully with a little care it will stay that way. thanks for the responses.
