Jonathan McMillan
The previous owner's of my house left a metal barrel out back. I have to figure a way to open it so I can fill it but when I get around to it I want to start doing some exercises with it. Anyone here try any barrel lifting and if so did you find any benefit with it as far as training the grip. Obviously it will an effect, I just want to know if other's think its worth the effort. sometimes I feel the problem with grip training is infinite possibilities and only finite training. Guest Uberman
Jon, barrel lifting is worth it, for overall body. My workouts are based on barrel. I add sand after using it for next workout. I love lifting barrels, I am using a 55gal metal barrel with a rim that opens so the whole top comes off. Great for using plates inside with the sand for quick weight changes. Right now I do barrel shouldering and bearhug squats, other major lift is the shovel lift.(yea I like Justa's stuff). For grip other exercises would be better, but for overall functional strength you can't beat a barrel in my opinion. Mike
Jonathan McMillan
Thanks for replying to my shoddier then normal post. I was working late last night and feeling quite fatigued. I've tried some of the old time stunts with my barrel (it's empty) and gripping the chins to lift it seems to give a unique grip training effect on the most distal finger joint. Have you tried any of the stuff Jowett wrote about in Molding a Mighty Grip??? Jon@han
Guest Uberman
Jon I haven't tried the Jowett stuff. I'll have to see about pulling it up. I have a 55 gal barrel I think if I remember right Jowetts stuff was more with a keg. A keg would be a pretty good grip work out, the 55 gal barrel works grip(fingers) some especially if you do the rim DLs. But most of the stuff I can do with the 55 gal barrel is more hugging not much you can grab with hands. I hand a plastic 55gal barrel once that was to slick to bearhug squat with much weight I used to hold a strap in my hand to help hold the barrel. This worked grip, but again there are more effecient ways to hit the grip hard. Mike
Jonathan McMillan
Here's the url to an online version of Jowett's book: www.sandowplus.co.uk/Competition/Jowett/MMM/mmm.htm Your right the barrel in the images is more keg sized.
