Grip In Sports

dimmers

Recommended Posts

Just wondered what everyone's opinion was on how important grip strength is in sports such as cricket, baseball, golf, racket sports etc etc

Does it play an important role? or do i need to focus more on overall body workouts that focus on speed and power, as the main goal of the majority of these sports is to have good club/racket/bat speed and power, to hit the ball further! Do you think someone such as Tiger Woods has a specialised grip program???

My personal thoughts are that training with the sledge hammer you can mimmick a lot of the movements involved in most of these sports, and you can use it to develop power and speed.

With this in mind, anyone got any other ideas? training tips? that i could use to develop more strength in this area?

(or just point me to a previous post that i've missed... or link to a site i couldn't find :)

thanks!

Your weakest link will always be the limiting factor in sports. Take the time to analyze your skills, strengths and weaknesses - watch yourself on video and have your coach or a team mate help you out with an honest evaluation of what you need work on. Kim Wood once told me "you build the strength in the weight room and the sport skills in the sport" - not much question that he was right. Make yourself strong all over including your hands and forearms but don't worry so much about getting stronger that you slow yourself down or lose track of why you are working out in the first place.

For myself in baseball, I have seen a significant increase of bat speed as well as control thanks to grip training. Sledge levering is so beneficial to stick sports that I can't keep it out of my everyday routine!

That being said, I have left out "baseball swings" with a sledge because it throws your swing WAY off. While you may be able to increase power in the swing, you lose the speed that is necessary to have a solid swing. You can't hit anything you can't catch up to...sledge baseball swings make the rest of your body compensate for the weight. This is not something you want in your swing...

Let me know if you need anything else on this topic!

this is a really interesting point you've made, because i would of thought the complete opposite! Although my main sports are cricket and golf, i would of thought doing swings with the sledge would of created more power and speed with the bat and club?

Check out www.dieselcrew.com and www.undergroundstrengthcoach.com

Smitty and Zach have put up countless pieces of information over the years on implimenting grip training specific for sports. I do not understand the game of cricket, but i do know that stronger hands will ALWAYS increase your game. There is absolutely no down side to making your wrist and grip stronger...
