Tim71
Force, That about sums up the current situation. Warren used to make a .353, .362 and a .375 spring gripper as well so the gap used to not be quite as big. Somebody on here, I believe Acorn, has a .353 world class. The .362 was called a constellation and the .375 was the old galaxy. Tim

When I used to do some chest crushes for bending I could easily get a set of 25 on the Pro. Best ever on my BBWC was 3 closes when I was damn strong and only got it for a single around the time I got my first KOAB. - Aaron

Bob Lipinski
I did my FBBC hard recently, got 171. Forgot if that was just plate weight or after calibration. One thing to add to Chris's long post on calibration- Strap placement is key. At the end of the gripper or just before the bevel? Every mm makes a big difference when you are trying to be accurate within a pound or two. Smooth grippers are harder because no knurling means the strap slides around more. I've done most of mine by myself, only had Dave Thorton around once to help. Pain in the ass, I bear-hug deadlift the damn thing.
climber511
I just did a bunch for Jedd today - v-barred each one as I couldn't get any help. Of course I always do them twice so I have to do it again tomorrow - nice workout

Grippster
Somebody on here attempted to calibrated the Super Galaxy a few years ago and it turned his power rack over. I think it was Kevin Bussi if I remember right. Search "super galaxy" and you'll see the thread. He estimated it would've took like 800 lbs or so. He did cal the Galaxy and it took 490 lbs I believe.Galaxy currently has a wire size of .394 or 10mm. Super galaxy has .437 which I believe is 7/16 and universe / celestial / Beast has a .501 wire size. Older Galaxys had .375 or 3/8 inch FYI. Here's the link to the thread. It's a funny read. Super galaxy Tim I just read the thread and the Galaxy he cal'd seems like it was narrow so a full spread Galaxy would no doubt be more than 490. Also, I was wrong on his estimate, he says probably 900 to 1000 lbs to close the super galaxy. Makes you wonder what the Universe is. The handles barely moved on the SG at over 500 lbs. You know that the first few cm on a gripper are easy. It would take well over 1000lbs of force to close that thing, look at the spread on it!!!! The universe could be as much as 1500 pounds or more, it has an even wider spread. Somebody on here attempted to calibrated the Super Galaxy a few years ago and it turned his power rack over. Here's the Universe: Galaxy / Beast / Celestial It's the same as the Beast and Celestial. I wouldn't say they're the same necessarily. Warren made 2 variants of the Beast/Universe didn't he? The one you can get from nutrition geeks now is rated at 1500lbs and has a smaller coil size than the previous 1800lb version. I guess it doesn't matter, it will never be anything more than a conversation piece. The RB WT looks weak next to the SG/ .501 size grippers and even that will never be budged. What does a galaxy look like anyways? Any pics? Maybe it would be useful for negatives in a narrow form? lol p.s. just one thing, why is it that we all agree these grippers are stupid, yet if we all had one we'd try it every day? Funny how that works isn't it? Edited July 15, 2009 by Grippster
climber511
I just did a few grippers and had one with uneven handles (I won't even bother saying whose it was - we don't need another thread about that). As usual, I did it with the dogleg in the device and when it closed, it was easy to see - so then just for the heck of it - I reversed it. It came out 12# different. Magnus
Just FYI in case anyone wanted to try it, I've been using Gorilla Tape for my calibrations. It's like the stuff was designed for it. Worlds better than duct or electrical tape. A single wrap around the handles keeps the knurling completely protected, calibration after calibration. Heck, I was even reusing the same two pieces of tape for some grippers, and the knurling still didn't cut through. Cannon
Got some new 5/8" grippers and I LOVE them. Love, love, love. These are going to be invaluable training tools. I made a phenolic sleeve so I could calibrate them as usual. The SM number should be pretty good because it's been oiled twice and has a few reps on it. For the GM and E, I oiled them and worked through some reps on the RGC, but the springs were really dry to and I expect those numbers to drop a little over time. 5/8" SM 142 5/8" GM 161 5/8" E 190 That Elite especially just seems high, and I expect that number to drop with some use. But it is a REALLY hard gripper.

I agree, but 190 just seemed a bit high. I would have expected 180-something. But I think it will land there after more oiling and use.
