Rick Walker
As I have mentioned before, I have a 16-year old step-son. We get along great and he sometimes likes to compare his strength to mine. He stayed home from school today because he didn't feel well. Thats fine, I understand when you are sick, school sucks. So I told him to go back to bed. Well, around 12, I walked into his room, without knocking, to ask him if he wanted some lunch. He quickly tossed something to under his bed. Now, being 24 (25 Monday) I understand what this means. GIRLIE MAGS :crazy So, I walked over and asked him what he tossed under his bed. He said, nothing. I bent down and found a nice shiny Playboy. Well, where there is smoke there is fire so I asked him where the rest were. They were in his ceiling tiles. Now, being a cool dad, I made him an offer I knew he wouldn't refuse. It was a fair offer. I train grip and I have a fairly good crush, can bend 60-penny nails, and my pinch is ok. But, I suck at tearing stuff and a deck of cards kicks my A$$. He trains grip now and then, can close the #1 and is a piece of paper width away on my filed #2. He out weighs me now by 10 pounds and is 5'10"-same as me. He can squat 315, bench 225, and deadlift 375 all raw. He lifts maybe once a month, and doesnt care too. I always said I am not going to be that dad that pressures so I dont ever make him do anything ahtletic unless he wants too. Back to the story. The offer was-If I can tear 3 of the Playboys in half at the same time, going through the spine, he would loose his stash. If I couldn't, he got to keep them. I even let him pick the 3 so his "good ones" wouldnt get destroyed. I was worried. Again, I am not good at tearing stuff. And, the Playboys have a slippery cover which I was informed-"had to stay on." So, I got the digital ready and gave it a go. To my surprise, and his, I tore them. It took #### near 5 minutes and I thought I busted a vein, but I did it. He was so upset that he said he should get a chance to do it, and if he can, he gets to keep the remaining. He had a years worth up there-God only knows where he got them. So I told him if he could tear 2-he could keep the remaining 7. He tried, AND FAILED. AHHHH, DADS RULE AGAIN! I then took the rest and tore them one by one in front of him, all the while explaining the importance of hiding his pornography better then that because I am a freakin' EXPERT! ( I think I had close to 100 in my collection by the time I was 16-and they were much worse then Playboy!) I feel like the dad of the year award is coming my way Rick Walker :hehe
Guest Jeff Roark
Rick, What was you thinking? tearing up good Playboys! You should never be allowed to grip train again! Looks like you interupted some hard grip training in the process. I would have atleast kept them myself.
mobsterone
I've just got the daughter - I hope I don't have to follow your example (thats not ot mention my stash/videos etc)
OldGuy
My son must either be very sneaky, or a saint. I have never known him to do or say anything bad, not even a cuss word or even yelling. I am a single parent, and he only lives with me. He too only lifts weights at home when he feels like it. There must be something good about infrequent training as he is very strong and has closed a #2 a few times. He is always so casual about things. Guest el4n
That sounds somewhat harsh that you would make him loose the porn. I mean it's obvious you are a grip enthusiast, and even though you are not going to pressure him into strength training I think you clearly overlooked the potential that those magazines held. Without going into to much detail, when I was his age and looked at my "stash" I'd usually get in an extra 2 or 3 grip and forearm workouts a day. Instead of disposing of his stash maybe you should have gone over "training" methods and just made sure he wasnt forgetting to alternate which hand was used each time. I certanly attribute my unproportional strength levels in my hands and forearms to this very problem, at his age I was more concerned with short lived pleasure and overlooked the long term consequences of not alternating hands. and being a step father you prolly have at times made a conscious effort to do your best to make good impressions on your step-son. However if my dad deceided to tear up magazines with beautiful naked women in them I might have had some questions about his preferences.... :hehe

Rick Walker
The tearing of the mags not only gave me a great workout-but it showed him that I AM THE BOSS-which was my point. To giggle and heehee and take them off to my own hiding spot would kinda be like telling him not to smoke dope as I blow a bong hit into his face. My parents would have killed me if they would have found my stash-BUT THEY DIDNT. That was my true lesson.... Plus-if his mom would have found them, she would have kicked his butt-she is much tougher then I am. I was merely showing the boy the importance of selecting good hiding spots, always locking your door, and never, ever thinking you can outwitt the ole' man. (I was worried because he never seemed interested in girls-I guess I can lay that fear to rest-I am going to have to put the parental lock on the "skin-a-max" channel!) Roark
Now that I look back on it, my dad must have had raised eyebrows about me- 14 years old and looking at mags with guys flexin'. Those were the only mags he was aware I read. Good articles. I have never seen an issue, and could not therefore tell you that Delores Wells, Playmate of the month for Jun 1960, and Gil Gangel Jan 1980 are having birthdays today. Hey, I told you my files are complete.
Sybersnott
Being a young man, don't punish him for his interest - he's 16, and every 16 year old boy goes through that. I think you're concerned that he had a "stash" that he was keeping from you... but the way you handled that situation was wrong. Good story. Bad step-dad! Rick Walker
First and foremost-Sybersnot: don't give me dad advice. I didnt ask for it. I was simply sharing a funny incident that happened to be grip related. I run $hit MY WAY in MY YARD. As far as keeping his stash from me-I am over 21. I can go to any adult book store, any strip club, or any bar. I was hardly concerned with not getting to see Playboy. Give me a f*cking break. I had an infatuation with porn as a kid. Like I said, I had 100s of mags that I got from friends and brothers. Unfortunetly, this lead me to treat woman as pieces of meat at a very early age. I was aggressive, dominant, and a control freak. Woman were my property. It wasn't until I met my wife in 1998 that I changed my ways. I hurt a lot of people before then and I don't want to see him go down the same path. That type of stuff is better handled when one is mature enough to seperate the difference between reality and fantasy. 16 aint the age and I don't want to seem like I support it. The story was funny, I proved my point, and he isnt mad. As a matter of fact, I heard him talkng to the neighbor kid about it in the garage and laughing. They were more impressed that I tore them- Rick Walker :hehe

OldGuy
I love getting advice on what it like to be in your mid fifties from guys in their thirties, almost as much as I love getting advice on parenting from those who have no children. Both things happen to me frequently. I am in my fifties and have children of 17, 21, and 29, but what do I know!
Rick Walker
I agree Oldguy. The only dad advice I take is the advice of MY father. He is 69 so he can give old man adivce too! Rick Walker :hehe
Nathan Say
I'd tear up Playboys. I wouldn't, however, tear up issues Swank, Hustler or Penthouse.

Rick, I dont think you can blame the magazines for the way you treated women. If that was the case every guy in America would be aggressive, dominant and controling twords women. This is almost as bad as some guy on the news last night who was claiming that exposure to video games is responsible for the DC snipers actions. Common, that's nonsense. Sybersnott
Rick, Man, lighten up!! What in the #### is your problem?!? I'm not giving you advice, just my 2 cents... so please don't go off the deep end. :crazy I personally believe that that was the wrong solution. If you don't agree... FINE. Don't have a tissy over it. Yeah, I might not be a parent (now) - but so what? I know what is right and what is wrong - I thought it was wrong (that's just ME). Again, it was a good story. I didn't like the end result.
Solan
Rick, nobody I know would buy Playboy for porn. Playboy - as my friends say - is something they buy for the articles and the interviews. Your son was probably reading a philosophical treatise in there while doing grip exercises. Snott, it's the articles and interviews, right? Nathan Say
it's the articles and interviews, right? Of course it is! People get Swank, Hustler & Penthouse for the pictures.
