Roark
Charles A. Smith wrote something to me in 1985 that I would like your opinion on because it seems impossible to me. Regarding Mac Batchelor, Charles wrote: "Another trick he had was to put his hand palm down on a table and let you press down on any finger. He could raise the finger you were pressing down on with all your might, EASILY". Assuming you were allowed to press down with only one of your fingers on one of his fingers, I could believe this if the palm were facing up. But palm down? I can hardly raise the finger adjacent to the pinky off the table WITHOUT anyone pressing on it! Further, you would not be allowed to lean your bodyweight onto the finger, just press your finger against his, I assume. Am I missing something? Sybersnott
Accoding to Dale Harder's book, "Sports Comparisons: You Can Compare Apples To Oranges", he calls Mac's feat of a one-handed pinch grip the greatest grip feat ever (based on a points system). Joe Kinney's closing the #4 gripper is right behind it. I wonder if this feat falls into the category of "legend", and is wishful thinking according to the author. I know Mac's finger strength was legendary.... but that particular feat is up for speculation. Roark, didn't John McCallum write about meeting Mac in the late 60's? What did he say in his book, "KTP"? ???
Nathan Say
What kind of 1-handed pinch was it, how much weight, etc. That's got to be pretty amazing if it's above Joe Kinney's closing his #4. He used to fill up a big champagne bottle with lead shot & walk his hands up & down. He pinched a beer bottle that was full of something (what?) with just a finger & thumb. etc etc
The Mac
Joe, Sounds like another "legend" to me, unless there is some manner of trick involved.

Guest mg6680
Sounds like a tall tale to me (but a cool way to train extensions).
Roark
Came across another mention of this in a later letter I was reading this morning, wherein Charles offers that 'Batchelor who could raise a finger when you pressed down on it with all your might with the palm of your hand'. If Batchelor's hand was palm down, I simply don't believe this, and if his palm was up, I'm still not sure the Budweiser horses could pull belief out of me. ChrisJames
Joe, John McCallum say's that he went into the bar that Mac worked in and Mac put his hand palm up on the table. Then McCallum tried to hold his finger down, but to no avail. Roark
Thanks, Chris, that makes much more sense. Charles must have typed down when he meant up.
Nathan Say
One more time, what kind of pinch lift was it? I haven't read about that anywhere except here.
