Jeff T
Around the workplace I've found myself pinching boxes of just about every width and I've stumbled across a question. Is it bad for you to pinch when the object is so wide that you can't get your index finger or middle finger around it? I've heard that you're not supposed to grip things too wide, but its not as though it's uncomfortable. For example pinching a slab of cans sideways (for me at least I can't get my index finger around it). Personally I feel that progress could be made pinching things this wide, but I am a little concerned about injuring my thumb. Any thoughts? bseedot
Hi Jeff. You may find it beneficial to take a look at a previous conversation regarding wide pinching. I have found since then that, for me, it is far more important to ensure that my thumb has as much contact with the wide implement, the fingers are a secondary concern. For example, when I first grabbed a blob I wrapped only my first thumb knuckle around the blob (trying to get as much of my fingers surface on the other side of the object. I found that this technique opened my thumb far too wide and caused a bit of pain (bad pain). Since then I have begun my placing my thumb fully on the blob (up to the base of my palm) and then placing as much of my fingers on the other side with whatever was left. This has allowed my thumb to remain in a somewhat 'closed' position and I haven't had any problems at all with this method. Either way, do be careful of wide pinching. BC.
