dansweeney
I know this has been asked many times, but my search was not getting any specifics. I can get 1/4" square at 7" really easy, but still can only kink an older red. I dont have any Bastards to try, but I was wondering if there is anything in between 1/4" square and 5/16 CRS? Thanks in advance! Dan
MalachiMcMullen
You could try some 6" 5/16 G2's. I have a bunch of 'em from John and a couple different stores and most have an easier kink than the bastards and the crushdown is just a tad harder than an easy bastard. 5/16 HRS I hear is a good stepping stone as well but I've never tried any and you wouldn't want Home Depot "HRS" because it's pretty much CRS. Brad Manion
Perhaps 9/32" and 19/64" round drill rod could be utilized. You can find them both either at Fastenal, or Fastenal will order them for you with a pretty quick turnaround. Cut them to 7" pieces, and you're at least maintaining the length you're going to work with when eventually bending the Bastard/Red. Good luck to you, Dan. timiacobucci
My weakest area is usually the kink but if you can get past that on the red at 7" and then get stuck I would say try 5/16" crs cut to 7.5" or 8". Adding the length will give you more leverage and be easier for the sweep and crush. Also working with smaller stuff starts to take away from your 7" kink, but if the kink is not your problem and is it is the rest of the bend then cutting down the square will help build strength for that big time. Sweeping and crushing a 5" x 1/4" square makes everything but the kink on a red or bastard seem easy.
matthcarl
You're almost there. I'd just keep hitting the square and 5/16 G2's (I think 'BL' bolts are about the toughest) with massive kink power and soon you'll get the bastard. Though unlike Zach, all G2's I've bent seemed much easier on the crushdown than a bastard. G8's or the shorter square will help with that. Tim71
Steelworks 5/16 plated steel at 7 inches should do the trick. Or the steelworks CRS would be good too but slightly harder. Tim
neilkaz
Take a look at Lone Wolf's bending log here. Robert is bending DR that is slightly harder than 1/4" x 7" SQ on his way towards a Bastard. With DR you can easily keep the length 7" and get 5 bends out of a standard 36" length. DR should be about the same on the kink as equivilent CRS, but somewhat harder on the crush. .. neilkaz ..
vikingsrule92
I'd say some DR is a very good idea. 5/16" HRS might be too easy, except for cutting it down a lot. I'd say just cut down some 1/4" Square and work on Isos. You'll be there in no time.
Bob Lipinski
The 5/16 70d's I got at Menards helped me bridge the gap. Not the shiny ones. Strength might not be much different than the square, but at $50 for a 50 pound box you'll get lots. Damn, aren't you in the Detroit area? There is some sort of metal mart between 12-14 mile on Dequindre that has good prices. The CRS there was a step above the square.
lone Wolf
I've Been beeen bending as of late the 19/64" Drill Rod from Fastenal and just recently took a shot at a Bastard in the contest in Tuscon last weekend and put a 7 degree kink in it the .302" DR should take a little closer to getting the job done. After that I got some 5/16" CRS from a steelyard that calibrated at 425 lbs. I'm almost there now still working on my form too . Good luck on your quest Robert
dansweeney
Everyone, thanks for all the great advice! Bob, you are correct. I actually got some 5/16" CRS for Jeff Flynn from Metalmart and I think its just easy enough to get me to the Bastard level. I may try the DR too, as the harder crush down will help down the road. big nasty
I have bent both 5/16 D/R and CRS the crush down on the D/R is way way harder than the C/R. Once I got the C/R good and kinked I blew through the crush down the D/R toke minute's and minute's to get down.

It all helped.
