Call up John at Fatbastard (see link above) and buy one of his 2.5" handles to start with and see where you stand with it. I've got pretty big hands and rarely use my 3" bar - just load the 2.5" heavier if you want it harder. Once you're pulling good on that 2.5" DB (who knows really, but maybe 200+) and you've got lots of money to spend, buy an Inch, or even better, go try one at a grip contest.

Morgan, that sounds like a good idea, the 2.5" DB is the one Steve Gardener has suggested as a great tool to find how close you are to lifting the Inch. I just ordered 2.5" DBs myself, but the small amount of work I did with the 3" DB made the Inch handle seem small in comparison; I am not intimidated by its thickness at all. That being said, if your budget is tight, I'd just go with the 2.5" as Morgan suggested so you can gauge your progress more easily. I've not read about anyone using the 3" DB to train for the Inch, but have read at least three accounts of people using the 2.5" DB (Steve Gardener, Dr. Alan Radley, Bruce White).

Definitely go for a 2.5" DB, MOST competitions don't go over 2" unless the Inch DB is involved.

I have a 3" bar.I don't use it to often but it's nice to have.

If you get the shot loaded inch do you have to buy the shot separtly?

That could be kind of expensive for the shot to fill the inch.

I got premium bbs from the sporting good store and they were pretty heavy and cheap
