Matt graham's 2" bar deadlift calling kevin fulton

Hey Kevin,

When Matt Graham did the 2" bar double overhand deadlift with 540 pounds, which is absolutely mind blowing, did he use a hook grip?  If I recall, I remember reading that he is about 6'7" tall, so I would assume his hands are large.  Hook grip or not, this is an unbelievable lift!  Thanks!

Don't you get it? Think for yourself, don't let others always do it for you.

Hi Steve-

Not to speak for Kevin, but for myself, Matt did use a hook grip for the lift.

Jeez, I guess my hands are smaller than I thought: I'm six feet tall and my hands aren't nearly big enough to hook grip a 2" bar.  Can everybody else hook a 2" bar?

I think that you need a pretty big hand to effectively hook a 2" bar.  I would assume that most people would struggle with this and you are not alone.

I can just touch the tip of my middle finger and the tip of my thumb together on a 2" bar.  No hooking for me...

Jimwylie1,

Do you also hook grip your 2" vertical bars ?

Posted

No Harlan I don’t.  It hurts and it doesn’t make any difference to me.

Steve,

Yes Brian is correct, Matt used a hook grip.  He has large hands and probably the longest thumbs I have ever seen.
