Hey,

I'm doing farmers at the moment & i've been wondering...is there any need for other grip work!?

They're THE best grip exercise for functional grip strength.

I think they're even better when you hold onto rope/material instead of bars, muscles are popping up from everywhere on my hands!

FARMERS WALKS ARE GREAT.

Thanx for reading.

Well..... tell us more.

What kind of weight are you using?  What distance do you do them for?  More details, please.

I'd love to tell you more!

I'm training them in the mornings, on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. As you might have read in my other post, i use two bags and hold onto the straps for my farmers.

Tuesday i do a warmup of 30m with 10kg less then what i'll use for my worksets. Then i do 3 worksets of 30m with 42.5kg in each hand.

Thursday i do a warmup set. Then i do 3 sets of 15m with 52.5kg in each hand.

Sunday i do the warmup. Then 3 sets of 60m with 27.5kg in each hand.

I'll add weight to each exercise every week.

Farmer's walk is a good all around grip training exercise but really doesn't hit crushing strength and pinch grip strength enough if you are serious about closing grippers or pinch gripping plates and blobs.  If you have a good grip your lower body will give out before your hands - even though it might feel like your grip is giving out.  Your mind will tell your hands to let go before you do some serious damage.  If you are looking for strongman type events for grip strength I would suggest hercules hold as well.

I`m with you on that Sammy, the Farmers Walk is a fantastic movement. In fact the very first grip exercise i ever did. Wade has a good point though, if its a strong overall grip then the Farmers are not quite enough, having said that though.

I`ve just recently taken to doing them with barbells, try it, its a great way to train them as heavy as you like, if you train at a commercial gym you`ll usually be limited to what are the heaviest DB`s, but with barbells you can go as heavy as you can stand! The torque on the wrist also forces you to involve more muscle than with just DB`s to keep the barbell`s horizontal.

My goal is to carry 2 loaded barbells weighing 100kg each across the gym.

Hey Sammy,

Untill recently i`ve had to do Farmers with 60kg`s on 2inch handles, these are the heaviest we have in the gym i train in. These were getting kind easy though and we had to turn it into more of a Farmers Run to make it harder!

So now using the barbells i`m using 80kg per barbell, that was done after 3 other grip exercises as a finsher so i think a reasonable goal is a 200kg Farmers. I usually do them once every 5-7 days.

your getting me scared with how strong your getting :)

Dave experimented with a barbell farmers walk with the bar held across the thighs (as in the finished possition of a deadlift) a few years ago and I must say it works the grip and lower back VERY hard.  well worth trying with a 2" bar

great to see your looking forward to the Bristish iron grip champs on 3rd August 2002

Dave says theres 10 in the novice section and has recieved yours and waz's money this morning :)

so hows Waz on the grip lifts......dish any inside info? :)

It will be great to see you all in 3 weeks time.

Hey Scott, Waseem says he`s loooking forward to the comp, and he`s lifting 82.5kg on the Pinch and 52.5kg on the Hammer. Pretty big lifts, he`s only 73kg in bodyweight!!

After i`ve finishe the training for the comp i reckon i`m gonna give a darn good try on getting the No3 closed, probably working on that exclusively for as long as it takes to get the job done. Specialisation has worked for me in general strength training and has been recomended by a few grip afficionado`s as well, so it should work for me!

Cheers,

Faheem

Sammy-

I think that the overarching question is, unless your initial post was just a rhetorical question, what are your goals?  As Wade has pointed out, the farmer's walk is great for what it does, but if your goal is to develop well-rounded grip strength you'll have to do more than just one grip exercise.

Well, who says ability doesnt run in families!!!

Waz's got one heck of a pinch lift and his curls arent shabby for a skinny fella (Im currently 75k) :)

For anyone who thinks the only competition is in the open can think again!!!  The novices will be down to the wire!

Faz
