The ebject is to hold the stick parallel tothe ground with your hand and use wrist strength and speed to twist the string up the stick. You can find the description here, but I also recommend buying Brookfield's excellent DVD Blueprint for Grip Strength, where he shows that exercise and plenty of others too.
