Timmy
Something has struck me today. I have been doing hoseclamped sets with my #4 for about a fortnight - and you wouldn't guess it....... The spread is only 2 3/8" !!!!!! It is only around a BB Elite level at the moment. If it weren't for the new gripper rule, this baby would of sold for heaps!!! ( Pics Later). Timmy
Infact, I gave it a shot, today, and got it down to 1/8"........ I don't want to be credited as a #4 closer using this gripper.

Mikael Siversson
There is always something strange going on with your grippers. Seems you finally forced the #4 to yield to a barrage of foot stomping, hose clamps and God knows what. bunchofbananas
Well.... as much a 4 as 4 which has had its mountings changed or something.
StalwartSentinel
Every gripper will get weaker over time. My 2005 #3 is easier now, scarred and mangled from hose clamps and repping abuse. That's why I purchased a brand new 2006 one - to see where I actually stand. I can still close the new #3 for reps. Same goes with my 2005 #4. Once I can rep it for 2 or 3 reps, I will purchase a brand new one and see where I really stand. JMO.

Bob Lipinski
My old grippers haven't gotten much weaker. My #3 from 2000 is still harder than 99% of them out there. And I recently tried an 06 one that was supermaster level Very very easy.
Mikael Siversson
None of my grippers seem to have gotten any weaker. Never put any of them in a hose clamp though.
patrick
Putting a gripper in a hose clamp will not make it weaker. I have had 2 different #4s in hose clamps for 2 months straight and when I took them out the spread was exactly the same as before putting the clamps on. And the strength of the grippers felt the same as well. The #4 of yours would had to of had something else done to it to lose that much in width. That just wont happen from putting a clamp on it for an extended period of time.

Alawadhi
He means old doesn't mean weak and new doesn't mean strong. you can find and 2006 #3 which is as hard as a 3.3 or as hard as a 2.7.

Fissure
I'll fourth that. I actually mean't putting the hose clamp around the spring for extra difficulty The #4 wasn't difficult enough?
Timmy
I'll fourth that.I actually mean't putting the hose clamp around the spring for extra difficulty The #4 wasn't difficult enough? Not for Forced closes. I probably should of done it to my SE, since it's the SE that needs to be shaved.

I actually mean't putting the hose clamp around the spring for extra difficulty.I just bought a New #3 and it's as tough as my Elite. That would be why. Any time you restrict the coil from compressing in a circular motion, by using a hose clamp through the coil or by inserting a pipe tightly into the centre of the coil, the spread will narrow. You are forcing the handles closed for negatives... the force has to go somewhere and if the spring cannot move, it bends the legs of the spring inwards.
