Nick McKinless
Lifting began around 11.30am and finished at 5.30pm. Arthur came over for a short while to bring over some of the extra pieces of equipment like the Euro Pinch and V-bar but he wasn't able to stay. Don, James and Marika all stayed for the whole day and lifted out of their skins!! I was so impressed with them all. Considering all they had done before this was some grippers and bending and the odd farmer's walk I was amazed. Marika has an incredibly good all round grip for someone who has done very little specialized weight training. She completed nearly all the events and was still going hard all the way to the wrist roller! Don will certainly challenge at the next Australian Grip Champs. I was most impressed with his V-bar work and still having the stamina to do some solid bending at the end of a long day. Don gutsed out lift after lift and still had energy to flip my big 700+lbs tire!! At just under 70kg James is a solid lifter and his grip is excellent. His best lifts were...well everything!! His climbing background showed and he was very good with the Claw Curl Deadlift, Extensor lift, One Hand Deadlift and Levering. If James adds a little weight he will be a serious contender in the grip world. I havent done any grip work since the Australian Champs in February but I had a really fun day. My best lifts for the day were a 100kg pinch, 185kg One Hand Deadlift (Hooked), my hard fought 67kg H-bar lift and going a pretty comfortable 50m with 92.5kg 2" Farmer's bars. My levering was pretty good as well. You really can't go full bore on every lift and the lower back takes a beating during a long day of loading, unloading and lifting. This isn't something you do very often but once in a blue moon this is A LOT of fun. I should note that although we used calibrated plates we didn't add up the plates exactly and just used their face value (hence a 10kg plate was 10kg not 9.9 or 10.8 for example). Thanks to Don, Marika and James for 'playing' with me, for Arthur for bringing the extra kit and for my girlfriend Nicky for making sandwiches and coffee all day!! mobsterone
I got tired just reading the results - phew. Wayyyy too much work. I'd be shagged for a week never mind a day. Yet some great numbers - esp Pinch and hook grip one hand deadlifts. If I can get 180+ kilos at the British (right handed) I'll be happy. bencrush
WOW! That sounds like my kind of contest. Not too hard to be strong for 5 events...but 50? That's when you separate the men from the boys. Awesome results from everyone.
