Which Muscles Are Flexed?

Shenandoah

Recommended Posts

I've been searching all over the place and just can't find the whole picture, so I'm hoping someone here can answer the following.

Which forearm muscles are exercised by;

Underhand curls

Overhand curls

rotating your fists inward

rotating your fists outward

with arms at your sides, turning your fists upward towards the front

with arms at your sides, turning your fists upward towards the back

Thanks.

Overhand curls (I'm not sure if this is what you mean?)

rotating your fists inward (pronation)

rotating your fists outward (supination)

with arms at your sides, turning your fists upward towards the back Depending on which direction your hands is facing, ulnar or radial deviation.

Thanks.

Great! Exactly what I was looking for!

As far as "with arms at your sides, turning your fists upward towards the front" is concerned, what I mean is picture standing there with your arms at your sides holding a hammer extended out in front of you. Your palms are facing inward. You lift the head of the hammer by turning your fist upward in front of you.

And then while holding the hammer so that it extends out behind you, you turn your fist upward towards your back to raise the hammerhead behind you.

I'd like to know now what muscles of the forearms these two movements exercise.

That is a great site! I searched 'til I was blue in the face looking at chart after chart of forearms.

Thank you!

What you're describing is levering of the hammer involving radial and ulnar deviation.

That last link I gave you lists the muscles for this:

Ulnar deviation (hammer to the back): "...moving the little finger side of the hand toward the medial side of the forearm."

Flexor carpi ulnaris

Extensor carpi ulnaris

Radial deviation (hammer to the front): "...moving the thumb side of the hand toward the lateral side of the forearm."

Extensor carpi radialis longus

Extensor carpi radialis brevis

Flexor carpi radialis

Abductor pollicis longus

Extensor pollicis brevis

Extensor pollicis longus
