pdoire
When I work pinch especially the 5-10's, but also my 2 hand pinch setup which is 2-45's so narrower, I seem to constantly split my thumb web open. My hands are a hair under 8 1/4..so hopefully its not because the skin is stretching too much..feels like where I put my thumb web to pinch is always right at the very edge of the plates involved..I have filed the edges on the plates and they still split. Do I need to just let them get tougher?? Moisture the crap out of that area? Can I use sport tape to protect them..or is that "cheating"? Tyrannosaurus Dave
I had the same thing with wide pinches. Moisturizer seems to help, but not just before working out obviously. I think David Horne once mentioned that it was desirable to keep the hands soft and supple when working on pinches and exactly the opposite for any other gripping. bencrush
Paul, my thumb web seems to be getting used to the stress of the wide and narrow pinching. Maybe it just takes time. It still splits a little bit but not nearly as bad as it was in the beginning.
DuTCH
I second Ben on this one. It takes time to let your webby get used to a lot of stress and not rip open all the time.. What also helps is to not always go for max effort/ ripping up the webby.. Oh, and gloves, to make it more difficult AND to not split your Webster open. dthor
You can change the thumb placement a bit. Gloves for the next plate pinch workout or two will help. You will be able to keep the workload up, while the split heals.
Mikael Siversson
I found the Euro standard plates to be far superior to most standard plates. Their rounded edges results in far less tearing.

StalwartSentinel
I found the Euro standard plates to be far superior to most standard plates. Their rounded edges results in far less tearing. ← Those are the ones that I use but they are quite wide. 5-10's is over 5 inches wide! pdoire
The width doesn't bother me it is the sharp edges...I seem to put my web right against it...a little hand positon change may help me as has been suggested. I read David Horne's "Hand Positioning" at the Diesel site and thought I was replicating that.
Clay Edgin
Your hands get used to it. After a couple months it should happen a lot less often. The suggestion to use gloves for a couple workouts is a good one too.

Jedd Johnson
Paul, Id shop around for plates with a better bevel on them. However, like the others said, it should toughen up if you give it time. For the next workout or two, wear gloves like Dave said or just tape it (this will probably hinder your performace). Or you could also put tape on the edge of the plate. Is it cheating? No - it just makes it a different feat if you lift it is all. Good luck with the cut. -Jedd-

Rick Walker
David Horne's suggestion of wearing work gloves is outstanding! Not only can you train every day, but you have to work even harder to make the lift. I love using work gloves for pinch. Once it is split, I have found super glue works well. -Rick
