carusom1
The info on the grade 5 and grade 8 bolts is interesting. I always thought that the different grade bolts were hardened by the cooling process and a mixture of different alloys Just like when you recrystalize a solid, if you cool very slowly it will form an ordered lattice, thus strengthening it as opposed to cooling too quickly will leave a solid resulting in an amorphous structure that is weak I think some blacksmiths will first dip in boiling oil as a first step so the metal cools very slowly I am no expert on metallurgy just thought this was interesting let me know your thoughts? smp76
The Grade 8 prices all look great. I have found at a local hardware store 100 grade 5s for $36.00. I was looking at them for weeks and then ordered a 50lb box of 60d nails for $55 which I am unsure of how great that is. But when I was buying the nails the owner was moving some big signs, you know the kind that take three people so he says "yeah strong guy come here (I looked behind me, Deaner knows the deal) " and then helped him move the signs. He cut $5 off the box of 60d and the next week when I bought the grade 5s he cut another $5 for helping the previous week. But like I said it is a local store and unless you guys want to come to Alaska then those prices may be the best you can find. I will look next time for grade 8 prices. That info on the hardening process was great and made me feel good about being able to bend "automotive" class bolts. -Sean
