A Mistake I Made,

Last October thru December I was doing KTA and just starting to get some new grippers. At that time I was amazed at how sharp the knurling was. Well, I am an office worker and had some pretty soft hands that KTA was chewing the hell out of!!!

So when I got the grippers from the #1 and above ..except my 2004#3 I sanded the knurl so it wouldn't rip my skin off. I did this to my old cert 3 ..now gone, my #1,#2,BBM,BBSM and the Elite.

It really hurts when trying to close the big grippers to have them sliding around in your "sweet spot". No matter how much chalk it doesn't make up for the difference..some are smoother than the HG's!!!

So don't do that!!!! :whistel

Let Dave Morton tell you about how he dipped the handles of his #3 in oil and shut it. That's slippery!

When I first got them they tore my hands up inside the fingers pretty good too Paul. To ease the hand breakin I just put one piece of tape on the finger handle where it touched the skin so I could keep doing them without having to take a break.

I know guys since then I have got some new grippers, know how to use tape. Have even put atletic tape on the bottom of the doglegged handles back then. I am talking about last year when I started. I am trying to let the new peple know not to sand the knurl off.

Thank for your input!

I used to be a toolamker, I know they have little hand knurlers that you can set a knurl with by hand. I have searched Google this very night and can't find one!!

I really hate sharp knurling on the grippers. I take a soft spongy sandblock and take the sharpness off, BUT... I don't eliminate the knurling, just the sharpness on the knurling (big difference). The sharpest grippers I ever got were the ones I special ordered from Tetting; I couldn't handle them unless I did something about it. I took my sandblock and worked them over a few times and those grippers are great now!! :D

John,

I don't ELIMINATE the knurling...not even back then when I was new, which is what this post is about. But I did take what seems like too much off back then. Today I love the extra grip that the new grippers provide!!

Didnt even know that it was possible, cool.

Here's a link, I have the large (2") version of this tool and it works great!

http://www.wettstein.com/KNURLCRAFT/Hand/K1-207.htm

Did it return the sharpness to the way it was when you first had them? And would it be considered "tampering" from ironmind if you resharpened them as far as going for a cert on a resharpened gripper?

Can't see how it should since you take off some material and then re-knurl the handles. When doing that the handles should get a smaller diameter and therefore be harder to close.

But you're right, the gripper have been tampered with (but to make it harder).
