Inch Dumbell

Last weekend there was a strongman contest in Boston. They had an Inch replica there. It was lifted by 2 guys, Jesse Marunde and Tony Scrivens. I don't know Jesse, But I do know Big Tony. Tony is about 6' and weighs about 340-350. He has the largest fingers you have ever seen. I have been told that he wears a size 24 ring ! He also makes one heck of a cheese cake. I was also told that Jesse brought it to his shoulder( with 2 hands ) and then pressed it over head with one.

They(kaz and Terry Todd) called today and asked if they could borrow my Inch Bell for the tiebreaker at the Arnold Strongman contest. I sent it out with an added prize offer to any of them that can CLEAN it.It will be in Kaz's Metrex booth untill "party time"...............Terry said we could start planning to include my Grip gauntlet in next years show....

Tom-

Actually-I do-except I have a beard.  THe bald head is right!!

Yeah-at my shoulder :p !  My goal for Jan. 2003 is to lift the darn thing up to a standing position-my guess is that I can't even get the thing off the ground right now.  The most I have done on my thick bar is 150.

I am more interested in meeting Kaz :D  :D  :D !!!

I just have assorted pics on my site of me and my lifting toys.

I hope to meet some of you grip dudes at the Arnold!

Rick,

Keep trying and don't give up!!  :p  :p

Is it me, or are all the guys who can lift the Inch over 6 feet tall and over 250 pounds bodyweight?  Not me (5'10", 225).... so do I have a chance?!?  I'm training to do it....

Sir Snott,

If greater height implies longer bones (hands) then

an advantage is present. Remember the post sometime back

where a very tall basketball player who did no weight

training for his grip, picked up a replica and aksed 'What do

you do with this ?'

A bar is only 'thick' relative fingers that are 'short'. To

Apollon's nine inch hand, the Inch bell would be the same

proportionally as a person with a 7.5" hand length grasping

a bar that is 1.91" thick.

None of the competitors at the Arnold Classic Inch

competition had any complaints about hand width being

a hindrance, by the way. And they all weighed in excess

of 300 lbs.

There remains that nasty element of 172 non-revolving

pounds.

I had been suspecting that Mark Henry had already been

able to clean the Inch bell- he had a replica to work with,

but it did not happen.

For Mark Henry, it's probably just a matter of technique now.  I'm sure I could clean anything that I could lift as high as Mark lifted the Inch bell.

Luke,

You may be right, but in order to clean the bell the

hand and the elbow must be below the bell, not on top of it,

and that bell came down instantly.

I think Mark has the strength, but technique, after all,

was never his strong suit.

And to put the hand and the elbow below the bell before

it comes down in a flash would be an amazing sight, and

the height of the bell is not the issue, it's his body parts

placement.

Your technique may be different from his; indeed, would

have to be to be successful.

Good report Mr Roark but any futher info on others that tried or actually how close Henry got? So... I guess my bell comes back with its honor in tact. What fun!

The way to describe Henry's two attempts that has the

most meaning to me would be:

Take for yourself whatever is a very, very heavy dumbell

with a thick handle. Now try to clean it, but instead of being

in the final clean position when the bell reaches the chest,

instead be in the final position of a one hand upright row, and

if by that point you have not assumed your 'dip' it's all over

because the bell is starting its descent and your hand is

still on top on the bar so you somehow have to turn that

thick bar and dip at the same instant that mother gravity

is summoning the iron home.

The bell appeared to be in front of Mark, so he did not seem

to be in a solid cleaning stance- just a very fast upright row-

which was extremely impressive given that a couple of the other men barely cleared the floor with the bell, and some others got it mid calf high and maybe knee high before losing

grip. NOBODY set it down of their own will- the bell left their grasp.

To me, Phil Pfister stole the show even if technically he

touched the bell with his other hand for one second to

balance it on his thigh. It was a study in determination and

bulldoggedness that the crowd fully joined in with. And when

he rose and kicked the bell up to his shoulder the audience was one in support of him. Then he plowed it overhead. So

at least I have once in my life witnessed the Inch being

lifted.

An argument can be made that had he not touched the bell with his free hand he would have lost the attempt, and that may well be true. Frankly, I think this is one strong man and

as he told the crowd, he will get it next year. I suspect he

is right.

A final point. Remembering that Mark Henry cleaned and

jerked the Apollon replica for three series, which was a

fantastic demonstration of diesel truck power, if the 366 lbs

is divided by 2 you get 183, eleven pounds more in each

hand than the Inch replica. Of course the Inch has a thicker

handle, but in all honesty after having seen Mark with the

Apollon, I would have bet, and in fact did predict he would

clean the Inch. Nope.

Wonder if people think Inch himself could match Mark's

performance with the Apollon...

And remember that at last year's Arnold Classic, Mark and

three other men (apparently visitors/customers) managed

to deadlift the bell, with Mark pulling it chest high- which

is why I thought he would be able to do it with additional

training on Sorin's loaner.
