Fuel Crusher
Surprised it took me this long to try but I did a load of pull ups today on some scaffold that was set at the perfect height, scaff tube is just under 2" diameter. Realy felt it in my forearms rather than back, mind you all the thick dumbell work last night may have contributed . Anyone else use a thick bar for their pull ups? underdawg
i haven't tried them with a thick bar, but i do them every week with a towel that i rolled up and wrapped in duct tape (like brooks mentions in dino training). i love this movement and feel it all the way from my finger tips to by back. supersqueeze
I do - 2.5 inches thick. It's the only way to go. You do get used to it though. I do not have an easy way to add weight to my body so I use pull ups for warm up and to help stretch my shoulders. -Mike M.
Fuel Crusher
2.5" thick must be quite hard, do you see it as a grip exercise or do you still get a back workout from them?
supersqueeze
As I mentioned, I do them as a warm-up exercise. I am pretty light so pull-ups (two handed) don't do much for my strength (hand or back). I will usually do 3-4 sets of ten reps, with a bunch of push-ups and sit-ups thrown in for good measure, as a warm-up for something like nail bending. I have tried adding weight to myself and doing thick bar pull-ups as a strength exercise but I don't have a good way of adding the weight and it turns into too much trouble to be fun. - Mike M. Fuel Crusher
Cheers supersqueeze, I'll probably go back to regular sized bar for most of the time (I do use it as a back exercise, weigh around 15 stone) but it felt great as a grip/forearm exercise, realy feeling an ache today FC
aeroman
I occasionally do pullups with two short sections of 2 3/8 inch OD PVC that I slip over my chinup bar. These rotate easily, which makes them even harder. I can do a couple of sets of 3 or 4 reps.
Guest Gripintime
These really do work my forearm close to the inside part of the elbow and I do feel it the next day. I use my kids swingset (at night when I go out to clean up the yard and the neighbors and my wife can't see me doing them). The top bar is about 2.5" in diameter. Nothing sexy....but I think its working.
