Things to buy from a scrap yard;

---------------------------------

7 ft solid colled rolled steel bar 1 inch or 2 inch thick. (thick barbell)

Two 1 1/2 ft solid 2 inch aluminium/steel bars.  (dumbell bars)

Magnets from car speakers of various sizes (microloads)

Any big heavy chunk of metal (for odd lifting)

2 inch thick pipe (for linking plates together for pinching, as modelled by Mr Horne in the photo gallery) :)

Anything else???

How about:

   Metal rods for bending/scroll work

   Car license plates to tear in half

   Elastic tie cables for resistance-related inventions

Train smart!

I love the magnet and elastic tie cable ideas.  You could hook up something similar to what the Westside guys use (with the cable.)  The license plates could also make a great training tool, not only to tear, buy what about putting a few of them together for a very thin pinch "block".

Get an engine.  Practice all kinds of lifts with it.  It will build your funtional strength, but its also something that you may need to do in real life some day.
