60d Nails

I thought I'd start a new topic rather than just continuing my old ones...

When a nail is described as 60d (or 20d, 30d, 40d, etc.), is that technically just referring to the diameter, or some other dimension? Because the timber ties I bought are 60d, the "polebarn" nails that I bought at Lowe's and broke were 60d, and a standard of strength for many people is a 60d nail. From what I've learned here, this "standard of strength" nail, or the "60 penny" nail that so many people talk about, is called a 60d COMMON nail, right? I'm just trying to clear up my confusion--and sorry if I cause any :-)

Thanks,

Justin

when i think 60d, i think 60d common. if its a polebarn 60d, most mention it.

nowadays, the size, i;e 20d, 40d, 60d mean a certain lengh. then you got common, galvanized, spiral, finish, ect.

I agree with Dave. If someone says 60d nail I think 60d common nail. If 60d is considered a standard of strength, then it shouldn't be something as easy as timber ties of polebarn 60d nails, which is why I think of 60d commons.
