Rebar For Long Bending

I was at Lowes the other day and saw the rebar. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience in long bending with rebar. It looked cheaper than crs and hrs. What would be a good size to use? Is this even a good idea?

I remember in one of Brookfields books he recommends using it to practice with.

I bent one piece before. It was about 4ft long. Reeeeeaaaaal springy. If your grip slips it could take your head off.

I buy 20ft bars of HRS at the local steel supplier way cheaper than any hardware store.

Thanks for posting this topic GarytheDino because I had also been wondering about using the shorter pieces of re-bar usually found near the masonry items of course for bending.

As far as buying the steel in bulk so to speak, I started out buying the 3 or 4-foot lengths from the hardware stores. Then I found the local steel distributor and I literally could buy a 20 foot section in some diameters and a 12 foot pieces in the larger diameters both round & square and HRS & CRS for either the same price or a mere dollar more give or take a quarter than what I was paying for the 3 and 4 foot pieces from the hardware store.

i just bent about a 4 1/2 foot piece ill post it today on my gallery... i would say start with a #4 piece of rebar and see how you do from there and work to a 5 and so on. it is very springy and dangerous to play with.... but since i have access to it being a concrete laborer i started messing with some scrap pieces

The common size for rebar is around 3/8" wide. Its EXTREMELY easy to bend in 4 or 3 foot sections, so challenge yourself. Start with 2' and work down to like 16" or 18". Starts to get hard. If you are a REAL strength god, get the bigger size rebar (5/16" i believe). Hard crap to bend even in 3' lengths.
