kelby
i ripped my first deck of cards today, it took a couple minutes, but it was a good clean break. too bad i have no cards to practise with. my wrists a are strong enough, but i need to improve my grip. i thought the grippers would be good for ripping cards, but i guess i was wrong. i need to practise with pinching more. GatorGrip
Awesome accomplishment! So when are you going on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Don’t worry Steve can give you directions. Ha Ha Do you remember the brand of the cards you ripped? Good going kelby and remember some sources of cards that have been posted on the board. Dollar Store or Similar discount store I think Clay mentioned- Casino Cards that are discarded before they are barely used that you can purchase fairly cheap My suggestion was Wal-Mart, which sells a brand named “GOLD CROWN” which comes in a two pack for 1.09. Made in China so they can’t be too tough! Again Great Job! Keep up the good progress. GatorGrip
t_rex
I still haven't got my hands on a loading pin yet, so I've been using my toolbox full of tools. :p

It seems to simulate the way you hold a deck when you rip it. Nice job on your first rip!
ironorr
Ripping decks is difficult, but rewarding when mastered. It is one of my first feats that I've performed, other than tearing a license plate. I credit my heavy levering, narrow pinch block (with cards nailed to the wood to make it slipprier), and an exercise that Brookfield created where you tape a gripper to the end of a broom stick and slide weight to the other end of the stick. You must close the gripper and lever the stick at the same time. I have been working on tearing a deck with leather gloves on now to make it even harder. Good work Kelby and stick with it and you'll be tearing those cards like tracing paper!
BigT
great job on tearing the deck, it doesn't matter how long it took to do it but that you did it nonetheless
JS27
Ironorr, How do you use your narrow block for pinching? Do you have your fingers on one side and thumb on the other like a regular pinch or do you pinch it like you would a deck of cards? Thanks. ironorr
Ironorr, How do you use your narrow block for pinching? Do you have your fingers on one side and thumb on the other like a regular pinch or do you pinch it like you would a deck of cards? Thanks. ← Ok, I do my narrow pinching just like I would do any other pinch, with the thumb on one side and my four fingers on the other. DON'T try pinching without the thumb on any movement that is pulling your hand DOWNWARD with big weights. Trust me and take it from my experience. I did this when I was starting out and worked up to some heavier weights and injured the extensors in my wrist. It took me 4 months before I could do any real pinching again WITHOUT pain and it then healed fine. It seems like using a thumbless pinch in a twisting motion from side-to-side does not put the extensors in a bad position such as when tearing cards. Use a normal pinch grip on the block and nail 1 poker card on each side of the block and that will be plenty to get your fingertips used to the feeling of a real deck. Make sure you keep your fingers and thumb very dry before any attempt on the block. I like to scrub my fingertips with a dry paper towel before each and every lift attempt on my personal narrow block (check my photo gallery to see my block if you want.)
