G5/g8 Sources

Gentlemen,

Still a newbee bender... have been cutting my own 1/4" HRS and bending G2's from Home Depot. Have bent a 4.5" G2 and many pieces of 5.5" HRS. Would like to find some G5 1/4" bolts. Home Depot has nothing. My local ACE Hardware has G5 only up to 4". Everything longer is G8.

Where's a good source of hardware (in US)?

Also, I've been using IM's cordura pads. What a pain in the back side these things are! I've read of a number of you guys using leather. Any suggestion on thickness, length, and width of pads? Thinking of trying it as it has to conform better to nail and bolt heads.

Many thanks.

Grade 8 & 9 Bolts?

Grade 5 and 8 Bolts

You can get the 10"x8" swede leather square from Micheal's craft store. I like the black swede the best. Most of the brown leathers that I have tried from there doesn't stay as tight on the wrap. The bolt depot has a pretty quick delivery.

Also, I usually still use the IM pads as a base under the leather. This gives a lot more life to your leather.

1/4-20 is a coarse thread, 20 threads per inch

1/4-28 is a fine thread, 28 threads per inch

it doesn't really matter for bending since the last 3/4" of the bolt is the only part threaded, but I think most people order the 1/4-20

I've had good luck with www.fastnerhut.com

they have some pretty cheap prices

grade 5's:

$20.95 for 100

grade 8's:

$28.14 for 100

I like a 5-6 ounce suede leather, cut into 4" widths, and long enough to make for nearly a 1 1/4" total diameter when wrapped around the bar.

Many thanks for the prompt replies fellas. I owe all of you countless thanks for the progress made since finding this board. I'll be going to Michael's some time this week and placing an order tonight with fastenerhut.

Thanks again!
