Substance before Detail?

With conventional training for the full body, what is normally advised is to build a foundation before starting the advanced stuff or adding detail.

I was wondering whether this is applicable to grip training as well. Is it more productive to concentrate on the heavy stuff like timed holds, overhand thickbar deadlifts and just basic deadlifts? rather than specialist stuff like vertical bar lifts and that type of thing

What would constitute a great routine for a beginner, who has been training on conventional routines for a few years

#### good question!  :)   I've thought about this one for a while.  That is one of the reasons I have not bought john Brookfields because I have no interest in learning any more exercises other then the basic good ones.

Thanks for the quick reply, i`d like to hear some of your thoughts on it.

I entered the Records Day earlier last year, organised by David Horne, with very little experience in grip training. All i ever did was regular deadlifts, chins and rows and Farmers Walk. What held me back in the big lifts like the 1arm deadlift variations wasnt my overall body strength so much as it was my grip.

However when discussing this with a friend of mine, who also competed, he felt it absolutley neccesary to include specifics. he`s much more experienced with grip training than i am, but i`m still not totally settled.

What`s your take on this?

These are the different grips and how to use/work them.

Pinching grip> hold something between thumb and fingers

Supporting grip> hold a heavy bar

Crushing grip> crush a can

Wrist or forearm strength> lever bar or wrist roller/curls.

Pick one exercise for each area of grip and work hard for a few years or if being a grip master is not your goal then just pick the ones you want remembering to work the finger extensors.  if any of this is Japanese to you then use the seach engine at the top of the page with the words you are not familliar with and you should get info overload.

hope this helps

Andy

P.S  If you are after some good descriptions then get Mcroberts book on tecnique.

He he :p !!!! no i`ve heard all that before! makes a lot of sense too.

At the moment i`m going to use the Fingerdeadlifts, Chin hangs, Pinch Grip and COC`s to strengthen my grip. There all movements which i feel confortable in doing and i enjoy. Been invited to do the grip comp in Summer so i`d like to go with something special !!!

Take care, Faheem

How are doing these days! You did really well at the records day in October and I'm glad that you are planning to go to the comp in the summer.  Coincidently, David has a little something planned for the end of Jan if you are up for it.  Lots of pain and skin lose are guaranteed. Have a word with Scott he'll have the details shortly. By the way those two finger deads sound nice - I'll give 'em a try and let you know how I get on :)

Hey thanks Jim, I`m doing Ok, just started my 1st year at Liverpool Uni, so trainings been a bit on and off really. Just been trying to settle in, get to know the new city and sort out my place.

The gym i train at now is really poor so i`m limited in what i can do, although what i have been doing is lots and lots of deadlifts, i just set a new PR on wednesday of 170kg for 15reps Sumo style.

I`ll have a word with Scott about the comp should be fun :crazy

Faheem,  sorry about that post.  I tried to write after wards but the flood warning stoped me so I did'nt bother.  I was'nt sure how new you were to the grip game so I tried to summarize it quickly for you.  That is an impressive sumo deadlift you have.  I hate deads and so will never get that far in them.

Keep it up

Anyway, hope that post helped some of the real newbies. ;)  :p

Ive got a set of eagle loops and super squats coming.  I can't wait.  I have got a lot of plans for those loops.  Im might get MOHS but there are so many others I want from there right now like Dino Training, Keys to progress, and ironmind.

Depending on what kind of training you`re into those are V.good choices. As i`ve got em` all !!!!

Super Squats is an excellent weight trainers book. KTP is similar to SS with much, more content, more detail to routines and much more humour!!

Dino Training is a good chioce for anyone interested in strength, theres also 2 sections entirely devoted to the benefits of grip training and detailing different grip exercises for beginners and more advanced trainers.

I like Ironmind it talks about Sports Psychology in a way thats applicable to most trainers, very useful and very down to earth.

What kind of training are you doing at the moment?

Faheem, thanks for the recomendations.

I am sort of a bodybuilder in the sense that 1 of the main reasons I train is to increase my muscle mass but I train with quite low reps for strength (3-5 reps for most and 10 reps for squats).  I train hardgainer style.
