INJURY

I just got back from the doctor..........the croaker confirmed what I've suspected for the last week and a half.........I've HERNIATED myself .Right above the belly button.Still not sure how I managed this one.....I've been olympic style squatting with no belt, wraps or shoes since spring.....up to 425lbs for a couple reps also been apollon axle deadlifting and shrug bar deadlifting with no supportive gear aiming for a 400 lb apollon deadlift with both hand facing down.Anyone here ever suffer such an injury???The MD highly recommends surgery and gave me a referal to a specialist. He couldn't give me an answer as to the likelyhood of being able to train after the operation. If anyone has any experience with this type of problem let me know what I can expect.I guess now I'll have more time to play with the grippers...........but honestly getting 400lbs in the thick bar deadlift was more important to me than finally closing my dammed #3 gripper.

A good friend of mine herniated himself around the belly button by sneezing!!!.....though the doctors recond the full squats hed been doing had wekened the area.

The operation took 30 minutes under local anasthetic and he was walking about the next day.  The down side was that he was ordered not to do any stretching of the area and CERTAINLY nothing which increases abdominal pressure for 4 WEEKS.

So my mate did benching, seated presses, curls, short range leg presses, high rep partial deadlifts, high rep shrugs and seated rows.  wrist work and grippers got a bashing but no heavy singles.

He then worked back to his PB's slowly over 12 weeks and havent had a problem since.  hes just stoped going very low in the squat and doesnt do less than 5 in the deadlift or OH press.

Hes also worn a thick powerlifting belt ever since and has no problems.  he even does 120lb sidebends for 15 reps and cruches with a 100lb dbell!

Sorry to hear about the injury Dimitri. Hopefully it's not too big a tear and you'll be back training hard in no time.

From my knowledge there is usually 2 choices with regards to the operation. Either they stitch up the tear or they place a piece of mesh over it. The stitching up method takes longer to recover when compared with the mesh method. With the mesh method you're almost back to normal immediately. Either way don't push it when you are recovering.

Also I don't know if you do already but hit the abs with weight, forget about crunches, do regular bent leg situps or roman chair situps with weight and even go low on your reps. Leg raises will really help strengthen the lower abdominal wall which is where most hernias occur.

Hope I've been some help and all the best with the surgery.

Really sorry to here that Dimitri.  I hope that you have as speedy a recovery as Scotts mate had.  And as he did, focus on the bench and if done VERY VERY carefully you may even be able to do chins (without weight).  If it hurts STOP, if it dos'nt then keep it up and not all your hard work will be lost.

Good luck and i hope it gets sorted out nice and quick.
