Andrew Dube
Happy new year everyone! Decided it was time for an update and maybe get back to regular posting here. Since my injury I started working with Dain Wallis, a name that will be familiar to those in the Canadian strongman scene or maybe you've read his book available at Starting Strongman. He's been helping me through my recovery with a pretty minimal training plan primary working on re-patterning some things and hopefully addressing the root cause of my nerve impingement. I'm more or less asymptomatic now though my strength (especially upper body) has dropped a lot. I'll be moving into a new training block soon so I'm curious to see how we start to ramp things back up. Last year I started taking drum lessons. I've always wanted to play an instrument. My dad is a lifetime, self-taught, natural, musician and my younger brother went to university for jazz playing alto sax. I had bought a kit a few years before we had kids and tried to teach myself from books and online for about a year then lost interest and when we had kids I packed them away in storage. Well last winter I got them out again and set them up in the basement next to my gym room and would mess around between sets. I found a teacher I really liked and in a few months had made more progress than I had that whole year by myself. We took a break over the summer when I was busy competing and I got injured right around when we had planned to start back up. So it's been really nice having something else to put my efforts into while my other skills seemingly diminished. Last year I set some big goals for myself and it didn't pan out quite as I expected. I had a lot of fun last year but I also beat myself up a lot over not being where I thought I should be. I already have some contests on my radar but I'm going to try and approach this year a little different. I want to read more this year, do more with my family, start jamming and end the year injury free. If I happen to set some PRs along the way that would be a bonus but I don't want to obsess over my numbers and contest results. I look forward to connecting with many of you this year at contests or here virtually!

How is everything holding up? Thanks Josh! It felt good to move some weight on the trapbar again though I think I overdid it a bit for the first week. I don't feel super strong, but everything is pain free and moving in the right direction. It's hard to know exactly since so many movements are either new or done with a specific tempo from my coach that its hard to compare to pre injury. There's a big contest May 30 with a deep U90 division that I'm looking forward to. Lot's of time still to get in form. I'm having fun learning a Rush tune on the drums right now and so far meeting my modest goal to read 1 book/month. How are your projects coming along? I'm sure I'm not the only one here who would appreciate some more frequent updates

Andrew Dube
Sunday February 23, 2020 Missed training yesterday so I had to skip grip to fit it in this morning.
