It did seem to save the flesh on my hands a bit. I'm starting to think I may do better to train v-bar every 12 days, instead of every 6. They just seem to wipe out my hands as whole. It's very close to the meet to be experimenting, but my v-bar has been seriously sucking lately.
bencrush
Excellent pulling Eric! 283X3 is very good. I would have thought the towel would decrease your max quite a bit. I might have to try it...but what the heck does Mikael know about vbar?

bencrush
My lift is up on the FBBC site. Good stuff! Congratulations Ben! http://www.fatbastardbarbellco.com/VBARCERTS.html Thanks Gerry! I've been attempting 326 but so far it hasn't risen with either hand yet. Think it's an issue of way too many hours at work and not nearly enough spent recovering. bencrush
Nice pull, Ben! Thanks Eric! Unfortunately my right hand hasn't been the same since the big skin tear it suffered a while back. I haven't pulled over 270 since then. I was pulling a bit over 300 consistently. On top of that, I suffered an embarrassing injury. Or rather a probably common injury with an embarrassing start. I came home from a 16+ hour shift that ended around 0700 and was very tired to say the least. But I wanted to stay up and see my better half when she came home at lunch...so I managed to stay awake and read until about 1100. I fell asleep and almost immediately fell out of my chair at the kitchen table. Knocked the air out of me pretty bad and hit my head on the floor. My head doesn't hurt. What DOES hurt is my right hand. I thought it was broken so I tried to sleep for a while and then go to the walk-in clinic for an x-ray. Well it alternated between a burning sensation and going numb. So I never made it to sleep. Carrie took me to the clinic for 5 x-rays. Long story short, they say it's not broken...but I don't believe that they have read them right if that's possible. I know that sounds crappy but I don't have the best confidence in the place we went. So why did I go again? I don't know now that I think of it. My hand is burning and achey today plus it has this very strange LUMP when the hand is balled into a fist or an approximation of a fist. If it's a break, it's got to be just a very small hairline fracture because I can make a fist. I can close the #1. I can pull some weight on the vbar. I can 2 hand pinch. But that stuff doesn't bother it. It's the things I do without weight that bothers it. Anyway, I'm going back to a different clinic today to get another hand x-ray. It's not like I'm playing the old game of going to 70 specialists until one of them tells me what I want to hear. I want to hear that my hand is okay. But I refuse to let it hurt and not do anything about it without at least trying to get things healed correctly in the process. Might as well add my actual vbar workout in the thread DEVOTED to the vbar. 3-21-06 FBBC 1" VERTICAL BAR -221-->at least 2"-both hands -256-->at least 2"-both hands -291-->at least 2"-left hand -nothing-right hand -311-->nothing-both hands -nothing-both hands -291-->at least 2"-left hand -nothing-right hand -256-->at least 2"-both hands Notes: Right hand didn't hurt at all when doing the vbar. Just had no gripping power above 256...so to see if the grip was completely shot I went inside chalked up my Cert #3 and ground the handles off with an MMS right hand. Weird. No pain with MMS. A little pain with CCS on the Trainer. Uncomfortable with TNS on the Trainer.
DuTCH
Ben, i had exactly the same thing as you did. I hit my hand against the wall cause something furiated me or sth. My hand was all swollen at the knuckle, and when i balled my fist it felt like a bee had stung inbetween the pink and ringfinger knuckle. That lump stayed for more than a week. I could do all of the things, but the lighter things were also what bothered me most. I think it took more than two months before it healed. I did have problems making gains in grippers. If i'd have the same problem again, all i can say is do contrast baths, and some extensor work, to get the soreness and pain out. GL! First time to go above 270 with the right hand since the skin tear a while back. More will rise soon. 311 is 5 pounds over what I did for the FBBC cert on video. So that's always good. Especially considering I'm always good for 10+ pounds over what I normally do if I'm on video or really psyched up. Both of which I was NOT this day. Bodyweight was 216. Also did most of the above in between Axle clean and pressing and front squats. I'm really attempting the 326 with all I have because I'd like to climb the FBBC cert ladder...chasing Ryan is going slowly.

bencrush
Great work Ben! Looks great. How is the bending going?-Sean Thanks Sean! Bending was going very well with my first Grade 8 on the 13th but I hurt my right hand the next week. So I'm getting back to it slowly. Working on the 1/4"X7" FBBC square as of yesterday. Only managed to kink it to 3 pennies though so I have a LOT of work to do! Short update with the actual record of the workout later: Did 326 on the FBBC vbar late this afternoon! Apparently only sleeping for 3 hours is good for the vbar? Seemed to work just fine today at least. 15 pound PR on the FBBC vbar in 7 days time is SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET! As soon as I can get it on video I can pull myself up another rung on the FBBC vbar list. I attempted 340.5 at least twice and it didn't even leave the ground, so I'm not nearly as strong as I like to think sometimes...
bencrush
Another completely unrelated thought occurred to me today. My weight is the lowest it's been since 2003 when I competed in the Super Grip Challenge at 213 pounds. That's exactly what I weighed today. I was ranging as high as 226 some days less than a month ago before really starting to watch my food intake. Watch it go down that is... gerryg
How's the v-bar training going Ben? Any new PR's?
bencrush
How's the v-bar training going Ben? Any new PR's? Thanks for asking Gerry and great timing. This morning after a LONG day at work and having my blood boil on a few occasions, I went home and stormed out to the garage. Locked the door behind me and got the FBBC vbar ready for war. Did a few warmup pulls and then hit 336 with my left hand for a new 10 pound PR on the FBBC vbar! Actually that's 3 pounds over the best I've pulled on any vbar so it's a great day for sure. My right hand sure wouldn't cooperate on the vbar though...nothing over 286. I still long for the days that I was pulling 306 both left and right hand with ease...hopefully those days will come back soon. Here's the full workout: 4-30-06 FBBC VBAR -221-->at least 2"-both hands -306-->at least 2"-left hand * -nothing-right hand -316-->at least 2"-left hand * -281-->at least 2"-right hand -326-->at least 2"-left hand * -306-->nothing-right hand -336-->@ 4-5"-left hand ***PR!*** -306-->nothing-right hand -at least 2"-left hand * -nothing-right hand Notes: I was angry when I started the workout. And very pleased when I finished! Nothing like success to soften the blow of a bad day. First thing that is good about this workout besides the big new PR for me is the fact that I hit 5 lifts over 300. 3 were well over. So that's what I wanted to accomplish for this workout. Ruled a success. 326 was my previous PR on the FBBC bar. Equaled that with a bit of room to spare. So I figured I'd try to beat my all time record on any vbar (333) and that's why I chose the 336. I had Carrie come out to the garage to witness/encourage me. She told me that I pulled it at least 4" and maybe higher than that! I felt it come off the floor and knew then that I could have pulled it to a full deadlift at that moment if I had really tried. Should have gotten video but that would have meant loading everything into the house and then possibly failing again. But I do want to climb the next rung of the FBBC ladder...so I'll have to get on it. Right hand is still not cooperating.
