Rick Walker
After 15 days off and a stomach flu that caused him to drop to 100 pounds bodyweight. YES, he was cussed out for touch and go on reps 2-3. Cussed out. Sorry if the back ground montage offends you, but it is a great speech that fits this struggle perfectly.
MattM
Rick most of the strongest powerlifters and strongmen in the world use touch and go, maybe swearing at your son in this instance was unnecessary. Your boy is impressive either way though!
Rick Walker
By "cussing" I dont mean swearing. I mean he caught hell, I told him we dont touch and go in this gym. Touch and go serves no purpose for a single as a single is from a dead stop. Yes, many men pulling 800+ for reps touch and go. I think that is because 800 for 10 dead stopped would be impossible for them. I have never witnessed it, have you? Has anyone? If you use the max calculator ((weight lifted x reps x .033) + weight lifted), 800 x 8 should equal a 1,011.2 pound single, yet these touch and go lifters are lucky to go into the 900s. When I use the max calculator for Casey, he is always within 5-10 pounds of the calculated max.
3Crusher
Nice job! Impressive stuff! By the way, dead stop deadlifts rule! Get the kid a pair of burgundy sweats and you'll see his deadlifts magically increase. Edited January 7, 2016 by 3Crusher
MattM
That makes sense it was more of a scolding rather than swearing, as you seem to care about your son a great deal and I wouldn't think you would do something like that at least for that reason. I'll keep an eye out for more training videos! Dead stop reps are great in powerlifting I agree but I still find value in touch and go reps especially in sports that allow it in contest, and they have helped my lockout strength along with other deadlift variations

Love it...but I like grey or black.

It is a place for blood, sweat, tears, and the occasional dead mouse or giant wolf spider. I am making monsters, forming men, not coddling babies. Do it right, never give up, give 100%, or get the hell out. I have kicked him out of the gym more than once when he started up with some negative behavior. Once he calmed down he came back and got his workout in. Could be worse, I was woken up every morning at 4 am to feed and water our beef cows, then ride my bike to the neighbors with a flashlight duct taped to the handle bars to milk 100 head of dairy cows for $1.25 an hour. My job is not to give him success, it is to provide tools so he can learn his own path to success. We do block pulls, heavy power shrugs, and weighted back extensions to aid in lockout strength.
MattM
I worked on a marina breaking down down old docks and putting in new ones, those wolf spiders are no joke. They would occupy hallows in the foam under the dock and sprint out once hauled to shore en mass. I also know what it means to get work done early, when I started training I walked the 2 odd miles to school at around 5 to be the first one in the school gym every morning! And that was for free, but helped me build work ethic and mental toughness.
