Rick Walker
As I have said many times, when training the younger athletes I always try to instill some sort of message into the training session. I always try to push them beyond their red zone each and every time and teach them how if they can get through this, if they can push their bodies and their minds past their breaking point, they can survive anything. I always tell them that NOTHING is going to be harder than the workouts I put them through and I try to get them to accept the fact that if they can believe it, they can achieve it. Nothing is impossible. As some of you may know, my step-son has a learning disability in reading. He has to go to special reading classes every day for an hour. We had a meeting today with his reading teacher to go over how he is doing. At the end of last year he was barely reading at a 4th grade level going into 5th grade. Now he is reading at a 6th grade level. She stated he is a hard worker, has a huge heart, and never ever gives up or gives in. He attacks every challenge he is given and gives 100% all the time. The result has been straight As on all of his report cards thus far. His teacher said she wished she could clone him and have a whole class full of students like him. I share this because this is a testament to what the weights can teach you. He has learned the value of hard work through his lessons with the iron and he has carried them onto the sports field and, more importantly, into the classroom. Never underestimate the power of the iron. His work ethic, heart, and no quit attitude has been built along with his body in the Dungeon, slinging weight. One day he will realize the power of that kind of education.
