Pinch training

Hi all

Iv been trying to work out a good way to train the thumb muscle for pinch grip. Im wondering if any one has used a strap, wrapped around the thumb, with weight's hanging from  the bottom of the strap, then put your finger tip's on top of a table so you can pinch up with your thumb. As i want to train that part to help me with picking up a thick handle 2.5 dumbell do you think this will help.

That is a good idea you have there.  I have never thought of it let alone done it before but I might try it.  Have you considered the 'titans telegraph key'?  if you have a bit of money then that may be an easier and more convenient option.

Do you know of any welders/metal workers that can make up a similar machine cheaper?  Also, I think that Ironmind has a few on sale still.

What about plate curls?

A wooden version of the TTK can be made from lumber scraps. Someone made a wooden TTK long ago and posted details about it on another board.

Simon, that's an interesting project you have. It never occurred to me that thumb strength had anything to do with lifting thick handled dumbbells, but maybe it does. I only know that on my thick handles (2 3/8 inch and also 3 1/2 inch) I can always lift more with a thumbless grip than a normal grip, but maybe that just reflects how weak my pinch is. If I try to put my thumb on top it just seems to get in the way and prevent my fingers from reaching under the bar as far.

Iv only started to do thick handle dumbble work,iv found that it's my thumb that gives out first when trying to hold it for some time, at the momment im just holding hundred pound for about 30 seconds i can do more weight but only lifting it of the floor to my waste hight then putting it down again

It's just a thought as im wandering if this will help more

Last night I drew up some plans on how to make a wooden TTK.  Next time I have some time off work I will buy the matirials and make it.  I do not think it will take that long.  I will send in the plans and a photo of the finished product to the GripBoard as soon as possible if anyone is interested.

Simon, I will try and build it in the next week or so.  My dad has a digital camara so it will not be to hard to post it on here.

Wannagrip/solan, how do I go about getting a photo on here?  Do I send it to you, or is there a button/command for it?

It wont be much to look at, so long as it works the thumb in a good range of motion.  I'll keep you all posted.

I have now started on making the wooden TTK.  At the moment I am missing a board on which to nail the lever to, but that shoud'nt be too hard to find.  It is all bigger then I expected but because it is made out of wood everything has to be quite thick to stand the weights.  It should hopefully be finished by tonight, touch wood. :)

Anyone got a good name I can call it??????

-TTK2 is a little boring and I will probably get sued.
