CMunger
Out of curiousity, what determines pro vs. amateur?
David Horne
Pro is for the better lifters who want to lift in the class with no bodyweight/age/sex allowances. David
Mikael Siversson
I am looking forward to see the results from the competition. I wonder if some of the four top guys will be holding back, saving themselves for the Europeans. I probably would. You don't want to give it all away to your (Swedish) competitors. It is going to be a titanic battle between, I would guess, David and Benny in the Europeans with the others in hot pursuit. Benny will have his first go ever at bending (Challenge bars) this week. I think Benny has the upper hand in grippers. They are close in pinching ability (both very strong) and with the v-bar. David is extremely strong in the one hand lift (I don't think people on this board realise just how good David is in this classic lift; he is nearly 50 per cent stronger than me for example). The bending is a big unknown for Benny right now.
The Mac
Mikael, If you can reveal it, how strong in Benny on the one-hand lift?? Or would that be giving away "Allied" secrets...
Mikael Siversson
I honestly don't know. He has not yet bought a handle (which he should). I would guess that he is going to be pretty good at it. He does farmers walks with 175 kg implements (385lbs) on a regular basis.

Cunny
David What does the gripper part of the comp involve for Novices?
David Horne
Graeme, It's the same for the amateurs as for the Pro's, squeeze the biggest gripper with your right, and left hand. David
Rick Walker
Benny has been in contact with me and is coming to BFGS 2. My first international competitor! Thanks David for sending him my way! Rick Walker
Cunny
David. Is that a timed hold? (if not how do you determine the winner)
David Horne
Rick, Benny's coming! Great. Yes, he asked about other contests and I pointed him to yours. By the way, he's a great guy. Very strong! Graeme, No timed hold. We have many grippers, and they have been rated, ie. 3.2, 2.6, etc, etc. Simply squeeze the toughest gripper with your left, then right, and add the numbers. There ya go. Why you thinking of coming? David
Cunny
Would love to come but I would embarrass myself.(especially any deadlift type movements).I like to see the results though to compare I could do with a few more years training
David Horne
Graeme, You would enjoy yourself immensly. Maybe another year. David
nils
4. One Hand Lift I wondered about the one hand lift, with non rotating handle that I believe that you are using. I have tested it a few times and my back gives out before my grip if I go far down which I guess would make it a back instead of grip test. So I wonder. At which height do you place the handle? Or is it optional to suit short as well as long bodies? Nils
David Horne
Nils, Adjust the height to what you want. But you have to lift it at least 5cm. David
Andy
David, are all the single-handed events going to be with both right and left hands like the grippers?
David Horne
Andy, Yes. David

Bill Piche
David along with Richard are two of the true pioneers of the grip game. It would be shame to see David hang up the hands.
EricMilfeld
David along with Richard are two of the true pioneers of the grip game. It would be shame to see David hang up the hands. I second that. A sad day indeed.
David Horne
Thanks all, for your kind comments, but yes after the Europeans in August (as long as I qualify for it ) I will retire from the Grip comps. But of course I will keep my interest on all things grip, and keep the Iron Grip mag going and will of course be here on this site. I will of course compete in the World's grip comp run by Hugo if I do get an invite. My training from then on will be devoted to Arm Wrestling, with a last shot at the World's, culminating in a podium finish in say 3 years. This will definitely keep my competitive interest high. As for the contest in 2 weeks time, there are 7 in the Pro section, and 8 in the Amateur. It should be fun, especially as we're off to a Punk concert on the Sunday night to see great bands like The Damned, Buzzcocks, The Undertones and many more!
