James Fuller
From the July 1938 Strength & Health. It is even mentioned in that month's arm article. It was to be included in the 1938 Special from then on. Here's the ad for Wrist Roller by itself: Photos of the set it would be included:
diomedes
Nice find! Notice how the roller is a nice thick diameter. I'd heard of the old York Big 12 Special, not sure what the difference is between it and this one. I think this pre-dates the ads I'm thinking of. I've always wanted a pair of those iron boots... I'm not sure why, as it's unlikely that I'd ever uses them! Edited October 5, 2014 by diomedes
mightyjoe
This is NOT the first ad for a wrist roller for sure! There's some Strength magazines from the mid to late 20's with wrist roller ads contained in them. If I can get some free time I will try and find a few of these ads and take some pics and post them. One of the most famous wrist rollers in the physical culture community of that era was the Red Devil by Prof. Orleck. Thanks for sharing this ad James! NICE one!
James Fuller
Yeah Joe, I knew you'd know the answer so, I made sure to end the title with a question mark!! I would imagine Wrist Rollers can be hard to verify. Seems like most were just a big ol' dowel with a cord. Probably weren't usually marked with the company name like plates or Iron Boots, etc. Thanks for taking the time to look. I know that the equipment is the main focus but I think the original ads are interesting as well: you get to see what other trends were about at the time of introduction. Again, thanks for taking time.

Thanks again for sharing this wonderful ad from the past!
Jones1874
Not to change the subject.. But do you know the era of those neck harnesses? They've been around for so long and I still don't think there's many using one. I see pencil necks everywhere down here.
