bencrush
On the first of August I tried out the monkey grip deadlift (2 hands) for the first time. I've done the one hand variety on a few occasions, but never tried the two hand version. Don't know why because it seems to be a good lift. I've injured my back in the past deadlifting from the floor so I pulled sumo style and very slowly to hopefully prevent a painful back tweak from recurring. I really didn't know what to expect so I went up in weight slowly. 135X1-sumo-chalk (easy) 185X1-sumo-chalk (easy) 235X1-sumo-chalk (easy) 285X1-sumo-chalk-belt (moderate on the dl portion-easy for grip) 315X1-sumo-chalk-belt (hard on the dl portion-moderate for grip) 335Xfail-sumo-chalk (felt slight back tweak, stopped immediately-didn't have the strength anyway to lift it even if my back hadn't tweaked. Sad, I know. Since my back failed on the dl from the floor, I put the bar in my new power rack and tested my grip to see where IT failed, not my pathetic back and leg strength. The distance the bar actually moved was probably 3" or less on these: 365X1-chalk-belt (hard for grip) 385X1-chalk-belt (very hard for grip-probably could have done 405 on a good day) 315X1-chalk-belt (moderate for grip) I'm interested to see what others are doing...and if for some reason this is in bad taste to post before the contest-I'm sorry Eric! Just let me know and I won't repeat that mistake. I was just excited to post and see what others could do.

bencrush
Damn OldGuy! Why did you stop there? I would have pulled until my fingers came off if I was in that range...

Jeff T
I only went to 265 the first time I tried at the end of a workout. Didn't want to push it too hard.

Jonathan McMillan
Good lift Ben and Oldguy, I still haven't tried the lift yet myself. Kindof running out of time before the contest Jon@han
MikeP
The way I read the rules there is no problem with doing the lift on Mon and Thurs of the contest week and posting the highest lbs, correct? I will probably do this as I have never done the lift either.

JasonL
Low Back disorders Ultimate Back fitness and Performance Both by Dr. Stuart McGill http://www.ahs.uwaterloo.ca/kin/people/faculty/mcgill.htm According to Stuarts Research, the back responds best to endurance type of activity, so doing heavy singles with low reps in deads is not so important for back health. If one performed dumbell or KB swings or snatches for repetitions is ones best bet for a healthy back ) JasonL
MikeP
When they start doing milk jugs for reps @ strongman contests then I'll start training for high reps. I believe it though, my low back hurts.
