aeroman Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 Yesterday I decided to buy some 60d pole barn nails because all I had been bending were 40d nails and was doing two at a time. I bent the first one into a U in just a few seconds. It was easier than 2 40d nails. Then I tried 2 60d pole barn nails and got the bend started but could not finish it. My wife watched me do this and told me I was about to pop a vessel. Note to self: Don't let the wife see me do this anymore. What I thought was interesting about all this was without even noticing I was doing it, I went from a double overhand style to the style where the forefinger of my right hand was against the thumb of my left hand. Is this to be expected when going from 4 1/2" nails to 6" nails? Are different techniques more applicable to different lengths of nails? HAMMERHEAD Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 If your bending 2 40's at the same time regular 60's should be a cake walk. -HH Quote
gaster Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 The 60d polebarn nails I've bought at my local Menards don't bend into a U shape, they just break. I could be wrong, but they seem harder than 60d 8 twist timberties I got from Home Depot. It seems like there is a wide variation of these nails. I guess I'm getting off track, but good job on the bending. Quote
climber511 Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 60 d polebarn nails come in two basic types - regular which are about 110# and bend easily and completely but sometimes break at the very end with no 'snap'. Then there are what are called "oil quinched"(spelling)and these are very brittle and will break before bending very far with a hard "snap" that hurts my hands etc. I don't feel these are really fit to bend. They are hard to bend, having almost no flex to them. Look around and find the regular ones. Meat Loaf Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 well i bought some true 40d and 60d nails from home depot and they whooped my ass. i managed to bend the 40ds (which were not easy) and i put a good kink in the 60d. the 60d is horrible and im gonna rest a week before i try it again how do my nails compare to "pole barn" nails? chrisof4 Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 In my experience, polebarn nails are almost always easier than regular nails. Quote Chris Phillips Kansas City, MO 2006 goals: Grade 5 and grade 8 bolt, 600lb power lift series. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
