Stock Inbetween Blue And Red + Other Stuff

Recommended Posts

Over the past couple weeks I have ordered an excessive amount of metal for bending and have a lot of stuff that I have not had an opportunity to try yet. I have 3 different diameters of metal between a blue and red and two that are slightly above a red. I also bought some CR flat bar that is next to impossible. I was wondering if anyone out there would like to try a piece of these and give me some feedback on difficulty.

Thanks in advance.

I'd love to try the bigger than Red stuff. Any particular alloys and sizes?

Pat,

It is drill rod steel stock that is about .32" in diameter. I think that you are capable of bending this. I can also send you some of the CR flat bar that is hard as a brick and some 3/8" Aluminum that is much tougher than any other Aluminum I've ever tried. PM me with a mailing address and I'll put a goodie bag together.

My experience with drill stock is that it is harder than CRS. I have a bunch of sizes (5-7) between 0.25" and 0.3125". I don't actually know what type of steel it is made from, do you?

Drill stock is so tuff on the crush down, and I have no idea why. Also when you cut it with a bolt cutter the metal just pops across the floor.

Mike,

I don't know what type of steel the drill rod is made from. My experience with it has been that it makes a very wide U when bent and like Jeff P said it makes it the toughest material on the crushdown. A 6.5"x19/64" makes a 6" Grade 8 feel like a joke on the crushdown. I can chest crush #4's, WC's, and can get my Constellation past parallel and this thicker drill stock seems very difficult on the last portion.

Good!! I'm glad to hear that your experience with its toughness is the same as mine. So often it seems metal varies so much from batch to batch. Maybe this stuff is regulated to some degree? It is quite a bit more expensive.
