Florian Kellersmann Posted April 10, 2004 Posted April 10, 2004 Hi, I don't get stronger on my RT (65kg). Any advises? Thanks, Flo Quote ARMS ARE FOR ARMWRESTLING "Always give your workouts cool names to fire you up!" - Devon Larratt
vince Posted April 10, 2004 Posted April 10, 2004 how often do you train your RT? maybe you're training too much on the RT, but then again maybe not. two things that have been helpful for me to boost my weight up a lot in the RT, is rotating between static holds and dead lifts with the RT. one workout with the RT, i'd use a lighter weight and hold it anywhere between 15 to 25 seconds and micro load. the next work out i'd concentrate on lifting as much as i can. dave morton gave me a good tip, make sure the back of your hand is straight along the rest of your arm. i found i was able to pick up more weight this way. sometimes i even do side laterals with a thick bar as thick as the RT handle - i found this helped my supporting grip. hope this helps and stay strong!! Matt Van Weele Posted April 10, 2004 Posted April 10, 2004 A few more details on what you do to train it would be nice. I guess just work thick bar, your thumbs and wrists and it should go up. FrankyBoy Posted April 10, 2004 Posted April 10, 2004 Hi Flo, I'm training with the RT twice a week. For building up the muscles especially needed for the RT-lift I do sets with 8-12 reps with it. Therefore in each training session I make a maximum test first and use 80% of this weight for the sets. Up to now I made quite good gains: From 60kg (first touch) to 75kg now in about two months at a bodyweight of 84kg. If there are no further gains later I will increase the weight (to 90% eg) and reduce the reps. And believe me: You will feel the training!! In the first days my forearms burned like fire. Good luck with your training Quote

I do only maximum lifts every 10 days. Perhaps I should increase the volume. But I have one hard armwrestling workout per week too (I tell you this, because, the stress can be similar). If it's good or not to have the back of your hand straight along the rest of your arm (dave's advice) depends IMO on the fingerlength. I saw this technique on a picture of Odd Haugen in MILO, but I think, his fingers are long. I think with short fingers you have to use your wrist more. With a straight wrist the stress on my fingertips is enormous. Why pinching is good for the RT? I don't feel stress on my thumb when I train with the RT. Thank you guys, you are a motivation for me Quote ARMS ARE FOR ARMWRESTLING "Always give your workouts cool names to fire you up!" - Devon Larratt
Vise Posted April 11, 2004 Posted April 11, 2004 variety is definately the key to strength gains (do holds, vary reps, etc.). if this doesn't work, sometimes the best thing to do is to take a week or two off from the rt. however, when you push past three weeks w/o training the muscled used to perform a rt dl, you will lose strength. also, heavy pinch grip will strength the fingers and the supporting wrist muscles to healp w/the rt. i try to only go @ 90% of my max for 3 weeks, then switch to reps (6-8). i switch this it back and forth w/pinch and rt so i always get to work out heavy. gripmaniac Posted April 12, 2004 Posted April 12, 2004 Just a couple of suggestions: 1. Try microloading (ie. 1lb every 2nd or 3rd workout). 2. Rather than do reps, try timed holds for awhile. When you can hold the weight for say 10 seconds increase the poundage slightly. This is what I've been doing for a couple of months and it's helped a lot. For me 4 sets of timed holds is enough. Start out at 55kgs and see how you go. Good luck. Quote

slazbob Posted April 13, 2004 Posted April 13, 2004 what has worked for me is weird but, it's working. i lift my RT about 4x's a week but, i only lift it once! then the next day i lift i put 5lbs. on...it go's up everytime it may not be motivating enough for you to only lift it once, but if you can do it, hopefully it will work 4 u like it has me. p.s. do this with your grippers as well...it may surprise you! Zevich Posted April 14, 2004 Posted April 14, 2004 I just ordered a RT and am waiting for delivery. I like Vince's idea of training with it twice a week, one time deadlifting and the second time for time holds. I use a similiar system with my normal lifting training a muscle group twice a week but with different exercises. I never plateau and the weight continualy goes up. Good idea for the RT also. That is what I enjoy about this board. There is always something new to learn! Quote IT AIN’T THE YEARS – IT’S THE MILES IF IT AINT BROKE - BREAK IT!
