Matt Van Weele Posted April 10, 2004 Posted April 10, 2004 Does anyone know who is credited as the first man to pinch 2 olympic 45's smooth side out. I know Bruce whit did some pinching of 2 45's back in the 70's but in the pictures they look more like standard plates and they certainly aren't a pair of the old fat Yorks. Not saying that he couldn't have done them though. austinslater Posted April 10, 2004 Posted April 10, 2004 I might be way off but I thought the olympic lifter John davies did it in the 50's as well. Quote Austin Slater West Richland, Wa
Matt Van Weele Posted April 10, 2004 Author Posted April 10, 2004 Austin You may be right. I have only seen a pic of him doing the old 35's. Maybe he has did the 45's though. Quote Real Name: Keyser Söze When the One Great Scorer Comes To mark against your name, He writes not whether you won or lost, But how you played the game. You have a gift Roy but it's not enough.
gotenmyoou Posted April 12, 2004 Posted April 12, 2004 I've heard that Doug Hepbern has lifted 2' 45s like nothing. Quote Real name: Yuichi Yokoyama
Matt Van Weele Posted April 12, 2004 Author Posted April 12, 2004 Yuichi Where did you here this if you don't mind me asking? I guess I wouldn't doubt it. Quote Real Name: Keyser Söze When the One Great Scorer Comes To mark against your name, He writes not whether you won or lost, But how you played the game. You have a gift Roy but it's not enough.
gotenmyoou Posted April 12, 2004 Posted April 12, 2004 Matt, I heard that there is a photo (magazine) of Hepbern lifting 2'45s. I assume that the magazine is 30 to 40 years old. Sorry don't know which magazine since I heard this from a old weight lifter. Quote Real name: Yuichi Yokoyama
OldGuy Posted April 12, 2004 Posted April 12, 2004 Hepburn did a onehanded holdout with 2 x 45 plates tied together. I have read nothing of him pinching plates. Quote Not afraid to ruffle feathers!
gazza Posted April 12, 2004 Posted April 12, 2004 Big Jim Williams also did 2x45,s pinch. Wouldn,t be surprised if Mac Batchelor has also. In one of my old strength athlete magazines i sent to roarke,i am pretty shure there was a picture of John Davies pinching 2x45,s. Quote "There he goes. One of gods own prototypes. A high powered mutant of some kind never ever considered for mass production.Too weird to live and too rare to die."
Matt Van Weele Posted April 12, 2004 Author Posted April 12, 2004 I wonder if Moe Baker could have done it. I know Jim Williams said that when he bent arms with Moe that he was the only guy he had seen that had a bigger wrist and hand then him. He also Moe had a hell of a grip. Tom Black Posted April 12, 2004 Posted April 12, 2004 I think the first to lift around the weight of 2 x 45 was much earlier than people realize above. From "Grip Strength" by Gentle and Webster: "On July 10, 1934 Hermann Goerner pinch lifted 111-pounds using smooth discs loaded on a chair leg. He was closely matched by the French athlete Louis Unit (state name Apollon)…" Of course, these are not loose plates. Quote Bigsteel
