daniel_lidstrom Posted March 30, 2004 Posted March 30, 2004 Hi, I have the IM 1-4 grippers and I'm able to close no. 2. But I've noticed that I don't have a very strong handshake. My strenght is concentrated on the last centimeters of closing my hand. I'd like to know how to get a stronger handshake. Usually I work out at a local gym where they have basic equipment such as bars, barbells and dumbells. But I can't figure out any good excercises for this purpose. Any ideas? Thanks! -- Daniel Quote Daniel Lidström #2 CoC and God had nothing to do with it.
ianders1 Posted March 30, 2004 Posted March 30, 2004 Do you "no-set" close the grippers? If not, work on that, and you'll get a stronger handshake. Block weights and piching plates will make you hands stronger as well. Quote "Keep away from small people who try to belittle your ambitions. showlarson Posted March 30, 2004 Posted March 30, 2004 Doing a lot of levering and support work will do a lot also. If the wrist is weak it will show in the handshake. Quote Shane Larson "Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional."
daniel_lidstrom Posted March 30, 2004 Author Posted March 30, 2004 Thick bar lifts works the pinch grip, right? Quote Daniel Lidström #2 CoC and God had nothing to do with it.
David Ostlund Posted March 30, 2004 Posted March 30, 2004 Thickbar works the supporting grip. Plate pinching and blobs work the pinch. Quote
bseedot Posted March 30, 2004 Posted March 30, 2004 Thick bar lifts works the pinch grip, right? It depends how thick the bar is. At some point thick bar work becomes a pinching exercise. BC. Quote The cure for boredom is curiousity. There is no cure for curiousity.
br765 Posted March 30, 2004 Posted March 30, 2004 (edited) I've heard that the ISG is good for working the sweep that would probably help for a stronger handshake. Edited March 30, 2004 by br765 Quote Brian Seibold
python Posted March 30, 2004 Posted March 30, 2004 Is the crushing grip the same type of grip when you handshake? Would working on say the Gripanator build your handshake grip? Quote
jad Posted March 30, 2004 Posted March 30, 2004 Hand position plays a large role in a firm handshake. A guy I know that weighs all of 155lbs and has probably never even seen the inside of a gym much less trains grip, crunched my hand awhile back. He just caught me out of position. It didn't hurt but it was well beyond firm and given the circumstances I could tell he was trying to be a tough guy. If I know a guy is just going to swallow my hand I'll just flex my hand and let him try to squeeze a rock while I apply normal pressure. If I'm trying to shake someone's hand hard I concentrate on applying pressure with the first two fingers. Training the sweep is excellent advice but good position will take you a long ways. Clay Edgin Posted March 30, 2004 Posted March 30, 2004 You don't have to squeeze the daylights out of a guy's hand - just make your hand firm enough so it doesn't get crushed. I have a habit of squeezing my fingers together tightly side by side so "tough guys" can't crush them. I think we all can attest to the fact that having someone crush your hand in a handshake is not impressive, but shaking hands with someone whose mitt is rock solid conveys an image of strength. Quote
gotenmyoou Posted March 31, 2004 Posted March 31, 2004 I'd say that a strong thumb & sweep is needed. Both can be developed from block weights. Quote Real name: Yuichi Yokoyama
Sybersnott Posted March 31, 2004 Posted March 31, 2004 I say... come out to the AOBS in June and you can shake the hands of many gripmasters! Find the one that you like best, and then ask that guy how he has such a powerful handshake and ask him to give you a few pointers. The handshake that sticks out in my mind is that of Tom Black. Ask him how he has such a strong, affirming handshake. Must be all that levering he does.... Quote "I have always been strong. JeffPeterson Posted March 31, 2004 Posted March 31, 2004 Just keep doing grip work and build some hand thickness. This will add to a huge handskae. Gordon V. has a very goodhanshake, it feels like he could crush your hand. He also seems to have very thick hands. Quote
thorfinn Posted March 31, 2004 Posted March 31, 2004 My guess: grippers regular and inverted (50/50 training time) levering (dynamic and static) block weight toss That should get you a good handshake. If you want more then plate curls, thick bar levering and finger walking should help as well. -Keith- Quote
daniel_lidstrom Posted March 31, 2004 Author Posted March 31, 2004 Thanks for all your great tips! I already worked out doing some wrist curls today, and I can say for sure I've got a lot left to gain there. Quote Daniel Lidström #2 CoC and God had nothing to do with it.

Dumnorix Posted March 31, 2004 Posted March 31, 2004 A little off topic, but if you don't want your hand crushed by someone who has read this thread, stick the bottom knuckle of your middle finger (the area where your fist would hit someone) out as far as you can before you grip hands. This will somewhat cup your hand and draw your fingers together, so all but the strongest and largest handed individuals will be unable to hurt your hand. Quote

David Ostlund Posted March 31, 2004 Posted March 31, 2004 (edited) The most intimidating hand I have ever shook was Dave Morton's when I met him last spring. His hand felt like granite. Edited March 31, 2004 by David Ostlund Quote
odin Posted March 31, 2004 Posted March 31, 2004 Since I am in an academic environment and mostly shaking hands with professors & other "eggheads & pencilnecks", I have the opposite concern. I am paranoid about shaking their hands too hard! I try to apply the same or slightly less pressure, but their hands often feel so weak it is sort of nervewracking to shake them. Meat Loaf Posted June 3, 2004 Posted June 3, 2004 My cousin Jim (i was 15 at the time, he was in his late 30s) shook my hand harder than i've ever had it shook. Ever. I don't think he works out, but he shook my hand and held it for like eternity. I was grimacing and squeezing as HARD as i could, but that son of a gun was just smirking and crushing the crap outta me. Oh yeah...the subject matter...i think that if you can no-set a #4, then you could break bone if you wanted to in a handshake with anybody. MEAT Quote
Lyle Posted June 3, 2004 Posted June 3, 2004 read alot of this stuff about the handshake, A firm handshake to me says alot about a man, but do you really need to crush theguys hand, that may give him another opinion of you........... Quote
raziel Posted June 3, 2004 Posted June 3, 2004 Trying to crush a guy's hand is a chump move. To add what Dumnorix said, to avoid some chump from crushing your hand, you can also "V" your index and middle finger when you shake hands. That way, your middle, ring and pinkie are shaking normally, but your index finger is pointing down the guy's wrist and forearm. In this position, the guy can't squeeze hard and mash the bones in your hands because he's at a mechanical disadvantage. This technique can also been done after the guy has started clamping down on your mitt, so you don't have to anticipate some dope who wants to prove himself.
