Guest JohnDrake Posted October 15 Posted October 15 (edited) (Warning: English is not my native language, i'm self-taught. I always double check for grammar or syntax mistakes when i'm not sure about someting that i wrote so please be kind to me. ) From as long as i remember myself i always was fascinated about grip strength and forearms as well. My dad was a boxer and had some massive forearms and when we arm wrestle (mainly for fun) he could beat me even if his prime was very long ago and i was beyond my top shape. I don't know how much of an important factor genetics are to wrist strength but all of my ancestors in my family tree (of course the ones i could find records of) did some pretty tough blue collar labour jobs like factory workers, miners, builders, etc. My dad didn't do any exclusive training just for wrists and forearms, he only bench weights, running, push ups with his knuckles and swimming, as for his boxing training. He fought on amateur level only but he was quite decent, his main (but as a part time) job was a painter, again i don't know if this job (it wasn't just a hobby for him as he sold paintings to galleries for money) require flexible wrists but i just mention it in any way. As for me, i used to go to the gym in my teenage years (14 to 17) and i combined my gym workout with martial arts (particulary boxing and some aikido in later years) but i didn't focus so much in grippers because i had an injury (i don't know the terminoloy in English, the wrist of my left hand got twisted really bad due to an accident -i fall from my mountain bike and i landed on my legt hand- ) and i always felt my left wrist to be very weak compared to my right and because i love balance and symmetry in all things, i didn't want to only train my right wrist so i avoided any hardcore wrist training which involved strong grippers (more than 50kg of pressure). I been to physiotherapy and somehow this helped me but when i quit visiting the physiotherapist because i didn't had enough money for daily visits.(like $20 per day) i felt worse than before. I only squeeze an antistress ball with my left hand just so i can mantain some of it's strength/flexibility but that's it. I enjoy lifting heavy things really slowly and when i feel that burn in my wrists and forearms, it gives me an ego boost, if that makes sense, like "i can do it! i'm worthy enough!" or something like that, i like challenges even if i fail most of the times that my left wrist hurts, i try to make the most of it. I like doing finger push ups and pushing (while standing) in some angle degree with my fists against a wall, i really enjoy washing dishes because that make my wrists burn like hell, also cleaning the house, anything that has to do with holding, pushing or pulling an object makes me focus on the benefits of it even if this isn't gym-related, i have see lot of progress the last 3 months since i began squeezing this antistress ball i mentioned above, i squeeze it at least some hours per day (total time of all day, not continuously) and i try to squeeze it separately with each of my fingers, especially with the index finger and my thumb, it gives me the feeling of blood pumping in my veins in my wrist, could be wrong though, i must mention it. Sometimes i like hanging from pull up bars (without lifting myself up, just hanging) , the more i hang and the more i feel like my wrists are really to explode, the more i notice gain in width. Every time i meet up with someone and we shake hands while introducing ourselves, i remind myself that this isn't an object that can last my squeeze and i must be gentle with it, because one time someone shake hands with me but he deliberately put on some more than enough effort (to show off his strength and try impress me? i don't really know) and i squeeze back and he noticed that and struggle to shake any more and he left my hand. I noticed that car mechanics do that too, squeezing the hand of the person who just meet more than what is necessary but without intented to, just used to being good at pressing hard the objects they touch because most have enormous wrist power because of their profession. Anyways, this pretty much covers like 90% of my wrist training, squeezing that antistress ball, washing dishes, some fist push ups (and finger push ups) while standing against a wall in some angle and lifting whatever needs to be lifted, like grocery goods or super market shopping bags. I love this forum, gives me inspiration and makes me smile when i get to know about your accomplishments in training and your overall progress in grip/forearm strength!
