NOVACE OF O-1

Contest is Live!!!

Following up on the massive success of ACE of O-1, I’m excited to announce a new amateur level steel bending contest with the hopes of creating a pipeline of benders for the bigger contests!

Over half of our competitors are active on The GripBoard so hopefully this thread will be popping with bend updates, commentary and more!!! Even if you aren’t competing make sure to join in and cheer on your favorites! I’ll post an updated scoresheet and witty commentary each week as well!

Contest Dates: August 1 - September 28

Format: Same format as ACE of O-1. There’ll be 5 levels of difficulty with two bars of each level. One point per level bent for a maximum of 5 points. The second bar is either for a second chance or to improve bend time. Overall bend time will break ties.

Bars: All bars will be 7” O-1 drill rod and only the exact bars mailed to you can be used.

9/32 (.2813”) red

19/64 (.2969”) orange

5/16 (.3125”) yellow

O (.3160”) green

P (.3230”) blue

Style: Unbraced and crushed to under 2”. It’s allowed to kink the bar DU or Reverse but the bend isn’t complete until the ends are 2” or less apart from the inside edges.

Wraps, and Filming: Horrido main cert rules for wrapping and filming.

Prizes: First place will receive guaranteed entry into this January’s King of Cold Rolled Steel 2!!!!

Top 3 will receive two Feats of Steel challenge bars for each point scored!

Top 5 will receive Digital Certificates courtesy of Jan!!!

I just love how a red nail equivalent being bent under a minute is considered novice…..NOT. Great job to all the “novice” benders! 🤣

They’re “novices” the way that the guys at the Arnold Amateur are “amateur” 🤣

Not to bolster your argument even more, but 5/16 drill rod is harder than a red nail despite being same diameter😂

Since Horrido certs may be stretch goals for us "novices"... looking mostly at the crush of 7" bars, what would you consider to be roughly equivalent O-1 drill rods to the Horrido 8.8, 10.9, and 12.9?

I think the closest equivalent for 8.8 is Q drill rod, but horrido 8.8 is probably between P and Q. I’ve gotten lots of Q that’s definitely harder! There’s a 21/64 drill rod between P and Q that may be the right answer but I’ve never had a chance to bend it!

Horrido 10.9 is probably closest to 11/32 O1, or maybe S  but I don’t have much experience with S.

I’m starting on 12.9 in September so I’ll know better then 😬 but i think it’ll be around U, 3/8, or V … @Viking may know better from his DU exploits!!!

We’ve had a wild first week with flash bends galore!!!

8 people (half the participants) are on the scoreboard and 5 have registered sub 10 second bends!

The top of the leaderboard already has two competitors with 3 points and Dana Mesick @Grizz_Zillaholding the lead over Charlie Taylor @usemystronghand95based on overall time!

I can’t wait to see what Week 2 has in store!!!

Great bend @usemystronghand95 You showed the sticker in the video clearly so post bend calipering can slide. Congrats on being the first to bend a letter bar and taking over the lead!!!

Great session Devin!!! Way to make your leaderboard debut all the way up at Second Place!

Since last update we’ve also had @strangerget in on the action with two lightning fast bends, Ryan Grabarczyk go back to back to back to debut with 3 points and Ben Porter take a 9 second break from the rockstar life to get on the leaderboard as well! Great job guys!!!

We’ve also had two big non-contest certs by our participants with Dana dominating the Horrido 8.8 and Ryan going big game hunting with a legendary BendSport Canada Ogopogo bend!!! I love to see it🎉🎉🎉

Great bend Charlie!!! You’re going to be hard to knock off the podium! I’m glad you’re psyched about the possibility of winning Feats of Steel challenge bars!
