New York legacy blobs

Recommended Posts

Posted

Later this month I am planning on picking up a few of the new York dumbbells and blob them.

First, question has anyone done this yet? I'm curious how they measure up to the existing blobs.

Second question, should we come up with a new naming convention for these to separate them from the originals?

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

When a year back I sat with the president of York Craig Lanfair he said that the legacy york bells will be back at the same specs. Now mind you, he isn't a grip guy. Just a business man. Any slight change will affect the lift a lot. But he said it should be same.

As for going over there, @Jedd Johnson have done it with the older york legacy. And don't forget, this york legacy is not the same as the original. Then again, what do you mean by the original? The fatmans? Next gen?...etc

I ment original legacy. I'm not even sure there is just one type of legacy.

That's why I was thinking if calling them something like legacy24 (the 24 referring to the year they were released)

So, if they do turn to be harder/easier we could distinguish them from the other flavors of legacies. Maybe I'm over thinking it. 🤔

So what I was told from Craig that it should be the same. They basically have the mold and will reuse it I believe. Maybe you can be one of the first buyers and report back to us if it is the exact same :) ?

Yes, that was part of my plan to put up a video showing the specs of the new ones.

I suspect the shape and size will be identical to the recent legacy dumbbells with the biggest possible variable being surface finish and paint which have a huge effect for grip lifts

I'm going to order a 130 as I have been graciously loaned the ones I have now.  I should have it in a week or so.  I will report back.

I am good at grip.

Was going to save this until it actually happens...but my wife and I plan on driving through York, PA next weekend on our way to Hershey Park with the kids.

And since that's Father's Day weekend, she agreed to stopping by the Weightlifting Hall of Fame Saturday morning (June 15th).

What I still need to tell her is that I just called the York Barbell retail store and John* will be putting a 130 and 135 aside for me to purchase while we're there.  hahaha

* Didn't catch John's last name.  Sorry.

Thanks Dave. I'll be interested in seeing how they compare.

I've decided that I'm holding off buying anything tomorrow because that new 130 isn't blobzilla...😔

I'm disappointed too but I will probably still buy one as a stepping stone to lifting the real one.

Everything about these dumbbells are even more "Legacy" than the v1 legacies. That is, like v1 the heads are taller and thinner than the original roundheads, but this is exaggerated on v2. The handles bumped up from 32 mm to 37 mm (or 1.5 inches) - my oldschool 100s are 27 mm (about 1 1/16"). The texture is very coarse. Pound for pound, I expect this to be the easiest shape yet.

For some reason my scale doesn't show the numbers well on camera, but they are:

V1 Legacy: 128.5 lbs

V2 Legacy: 133.9 lbs

I found this surprising, because of all the Legacies I've weighed, only one was ever OVER the stated weight. Most are under, and by a good margin. My 140s/150s are all 5-8 lbs underweight.

Really interesting. This might sound crazy but is it possible they purposely made them like this to be easier for blobs? I know they have gotten more popular lately but I can't imagine grip being popular enough to warrant these kind of design changes

Thanks for the report @DAVE101 . So the older yorks are a fatman blobzilla and these are the next gen blobzilla. Interested in buying few for a stepping stone!

The more I look into it, the better I think they will be as a stepping stone. I am wondering about the surface/paint? Is it harder?

Its not crazy but like you said I can't imagine that either.

At the end of the day it comes down to $$$$$ and Yorks been around the block a few times.. Probably for whatever reason, these molds are easier to manufacture package and ship maybe?

Either way thanks @DAVE101... Id still be interested in buying some some time

What a bummer! I was about to get some with a friend of mine to chop em up into blobs, but it’s not the real deal as far as Blobzilla and Blobfather goes.

So if anyone has v1 legacys 120, 130, 140 please msg me

Also thank you to @DAVE101 for the info on these

You know even though they are different doesn't mean they aren't worth buying and training on. Believe me I get it I'm a purist with anything I'm into, I've spent thousands and thousands on guitar gear just to make certain sounds in my bedroom....

people back in the day used what was available....  We should do the same...   Yorks is manufacturing something we can make blobs out of and Im psyched about that.

Maybe have to go up in weight to get the size you need. Maybe 140 or 150 obviously it’s heavier but the width is the challenge here
