awesome :rock

Make sure you keep your hands healthy

Bending is very tough on your whole hand; ligaments, tendons, musculature

1. Hot / Cold therapy

2. dexterity balls

3. Sleep with gloves

4. massage

5. extensor work

6. kneed cold clay/playdoh

I will try to take up nail bending also... I have tried to bend nails before, but I'm not any good at it.

I've just started nail bending - what is the length of the ironmind 'nails'. I can do a five mill x 6" easy - nop probs (I'm told the same as a IM white) but a 6mm x 6" is killing me - it just, and I mean, just moves. Any links - topics, PM's etc I shouild be looking at.

Nice first bend! I would recomend going to lengths of HRS next. I find it has more consistency and makes for easiser progression than just going to 40d nails.

good job man, i remeber the first time i bent a nail it was a very hard 60d that think took me awhile.

Interesting point. I'll compete in the Geneva Grip Contest in October. I'll then see what i can do on the weaver stick (never tried before) and if there is a correlation between it and bending strength (there should be).

The weaver stick hits the exact same muscle/tendon groups as does the lead hand in hand-over-hand bending style. If you have a world-class weaver stick ability, then the lead hand should have world-class bending potential. The only weak point would be the front-lever motion with the other hand, or perhaps the crush.

Nice job on the 30D. Bend as many as you can, and technique will show itself to you quickly!

I have had this question on my mind and this thread seems like as good a place as any to post it.

Assuming good form, has anyone noticed what their bending abilities were related to their levering strength? ie I could bend this nail when I could handle this much torque in this movement.

Just trying to find out if maybe there's a consensus on this or maybe even a general range.

Well, I can't lever an 8lb hammer for crap, but I've bent a 5.75 inch blue nail.

I enjoy the side-to-side lever, and I've noted the following to be 100% true (for me):

I've noticed that when I focus on levering for a while, my nail bending jumps too, and when I focus on bending for a while, my levering jumps up along with it.

I don't keep track of weights or inches any more, but after I am able to bend my next goal nail or length, I am usualy able to do my old side-to-side levering PR for reps. Also, when I reach a new PR in my levering, my old goal nails seem easier.

OldGuy, Ironmind Yellows 1/4'' x 7''.

mobsterone, do you have any specific goals? Progressively cutting and bending shorter and shorter pieces of steel from a rod is a good way to advance. Another way is to progressively increase the thickness of the same length of metal by shaving the centers down to different diameters and progressively bend metal shaved less and less until you're bending unshaved metal. I have an example of this approach here:
