Shopping At Lowes

I picked up some steele on Saturday at Lowes but I've got a few questions for some of you benders that shop there.

1. I picked up 1/4" H.R. and C.R. in 3 and 4 foot lengths. They also had some 1/4" that wasn't labeled, either on the rod, or its bin. Is there another type? They were cheap so I grabbed a couple of them as well. They all had blue paint on the ends.

2. Also is the Ironmind yellow Hot or cold rolled. I thought it was cold rolled but a search didn't turn it up.

3. Has anybody had any experience with the 60d they sell there, they look huge. My original goal was a 60d but from looking at those I'd be better off trying to bend the kickstand off my bike. :cry

Dyoder,

I mainly shop for steel at Home Depot where they carry Crown Bolt Co. HRS, which is very close to the strength of Ironmind's stock. Although HRS, it has definitely been hardened (quenched maybe, after rolling hot?) and can be softened considerably by annealling.

I wouldn't worry about HRS vs. CRS, just keep buying the same stock and progress on it. After you are bending <6" pieces of 1/4" stock, you should be ready for some true 60D nails.

1). The dull unlabed stuff is usualy non-coated HRS. The other HRS is covered with Zinc. Does anyone know if this has a minor effect on the strength?

2). IronMind used to sell Cold Rolled stock, but changed to Hot Rolled, thus leading to some great mis-understandings about what difficulty each was.

3). My first experience with a 60D was one of humor. I thought they were a joke, and that there was no way to bend them. I bought a few as motivation, as each time I would see them, I would laugh. With in a few weeks, I was bending them. Remember, the body won't go where the mind hasn't been. Overcoming this intimidation of the 60D is the first hurdle in being able to bend it. On my first 60D I had a flash in my brain of "I CAN bend it", and then did. The day before I believed it was impossible.

That, or maybe it's an 80D in the wrong bin... :D 6"x1/4", right? If it's any other length, it's not a 60D.

Does anyone have a good source?

the zinc coating makes it just a little bit harder to bend in my experience... 1/4" HRS WITH zinc coating is still easier than 1/4"CRS though.

Bender,

They are 60d. They're 6" long, but just by eye balling them they seem a fair bit thicker than 1/4". I bought 10 of them just to look at longingly. I also picked up a box of 60d that were spiraled.

What were you bending before you got the 60d. I got 7 1/2" x 1/4" the other day. I figured (or was hoping) a 5" x 1/4" would get me the 60d, since Ironmind says their blue is the equivalent of a medium 60d. I'm shooting for next spring as my goal.

Check out Nail Progression for my general progression. At the time, I bent mostly Timber Ties and started to cut down Yellow nails.

dyoder16,

Did you check to see what company manufactures these nails? I have bought some 60P nails at Lowe's and they are much harder than a 5" long 1/4" diameter Grade 5 bolt.

Look for a mic on Ebay otherwise they are pricey.

All of the 60D nails I have tried in the last couple of years have been harder to bend than the BLUE.

You might try Harbor Freight. Not the best stuff in the world, but their calipers and micrometers are very inexpensive. I have their 6" digital caliper and it seems to work well enough.
