Hello everyone! :D

it has been awhile since i was on here. i am pleased to see the gripboard going strong! i am still training and can now do the following.

lever from extended arm position to forehead 12 pound sledge!

tear a deck of cards in half!

i stoped training for the #3 to train for, (what i feel are more impressive) things.

i am now shooting for two goals. bending a 30 penny nail, then going onto a 40,

and 60. and tearing a phone book in half.

i need to have some input on tearing a phone book though. i cant find any pics of it being done.

could you please describe the basic , or most common rip for me please?

thanks dave

I bought a ten pound sledge. But I never tried to lever it from the extended possition. I just hold it at my side and raise it anteriorly to work the brachioradialis. Its a good pump, but I think I should try some other ways to train with it. The cool thing is there is a million ways to use a sledge. Good luck with the phonebook. :mosher:mosher:mosher

The one thick phonebook I did (St. Paul), I pinched the binding as hard as I could, then started pulling back and forth until a rip started. Once it started I just held on and kept pulling until it came apart. It took a few minutes and my hands were shaking afterwards, but it was fun!

Bender-Awesome job on the tearing. Cant wait to try it. Thanks for the tip on the party phone book check, I would hate to be embarrased! :laugh Austin Slater

Thanks to Grip-Godess for pointing out the misspelling of the word "tear" in every case I used it...

The fun part about that page is it took about 20 minutes to make, from grabbing the cammera to hitting "Save Page As". Too easy.

Thank you Bender for putting that page up. The kids at work have been wanting me to tear books for them. I guess I will start now. Great job!

Good recommendation of using catalogs, too. I never thought of that. I definitely have more of those laying around than thick phone books.

Yes, you tare a balance (set it to zero) but you tear a phonebook.

Nice description of tearing. My apartment building has a HUGE stack of Manhattan Yellowpages in the lobby. Perhaps i should try out your techniques tonight. :D

I remember the word "Tare" from my chemistry scales...

I know the liquid that falls from the eye is a "Tear"...

So how do you spell the word of "ripping a piece of paper in half?"

So it's spelled like the second, but pronounced like the first? :blink

To all the people who have learned english as a second language, I appologize for this non-sense.

I guess I do it the hard way (probably why the 3-inch clearwater, FL phonebook took me 3-5 minutes to tear! Talk about muscular failure!).

I grab the book from the top, both hands about 1 inch apart. I then begin to twist the book while squeezing it as hard as I possibly can. If the paper crumples, you aren't squeezing hard enough. If the book bends too much, twist in the other direction. As soon as a small tear starts, I then pull one hand towards me, and the other I push away. The phonebook usually comes apart easily at this point.

My forearms were in agony for a couple of days after this... I have a stack of old paperback books that I am using for practice in the meantime. I don't know how well this equates to other feats of grip strength, I can't close a #2 :( , but I have done farmer's walks with 240lbs in each hand for 85-90 feet before... and I do tons of thickbar work.

Dear Bender -

With your article, I got 1/3 of the way through a directory the local geeks were daring me to tear. Upon looking at the book, I realised that the tear stopped at a laminated cardboard page 1/3 of the way through.

I'm stoked!

However, you say on your page - "rip the book in half using any technique" ---- such as?

----------

Addendum - I wasn't happy with this post, so I grabbed the book and tore for all I was worth. I got through it. :blink It was only 1.1" thick, it was the EITD guide, but it was a bona fide phonebook, and I tore it in front of a witness at work, so I can confidently mail him the two halves with a co-worker verifying I did it. :rock

I'm glad so many people have had success with just a few pointers on technique. Nail bending is the same way. Once the technique is learned, the mystique of the feat is reduced quite a bit. Ya know, "Knowing is half the battle".

I also tore my first phone book last night. Unfortunately it was only 1/2" thick. :(:blush

It was funny. I started with the 3" thick one. No luck. So I was thinking OK

I'll settle for the little 1 1/4" one. I managed to twist it up good but that was it.

So finally I took out the 1/2" one and tore it with much effort. I'm on the KTA so technically I'm not supposed to do other grip stuff but I couldn't resist.

Then my wife gets home and tells me that that was the phonebook from her hometown

that she has been wanting forever and her uncle finally brought it back to her after he

visited. :blink I also got scolded for messing up the other phone books as well.

I had to laugh. :D

I almost did the same thing... but my mother managed to stop me before I mangeled the phonebook beyond recognition. :laugh

The one I tore didn't split the way it did on Bender's page..... the only thing that happened was that the cover cracked in half. I tore through it with brute force, which was a lot more fun and took a lot more time.

I'll find a real phone book without inserts and give it a try.
