Strong Man
Today i watched a video of a kid crushing a can, he wasn't very big or strong he could close a #2 and bench 200lbs, it was pretty impressive. Today when my dad saw it he said that he probably couldn't do that with a canadian can, i don't know if this is true or if canadians cans are stronger, i'll try it out and let you know. Strong Man
i guess it doesn't really matter what i said before, today when i got home from school i tried crushing a pop can, and did it.
Guest chips
I had read, I think from the MOHS that an aluminum can requires 300lbs of pressure to rupture. that would indeed be a site to see a young teen do.
Strong Man
well i can close a #3 almost in my left
2strong
I have tried many times... but have never been able to crush a can. My personal best in the bench press is over 420 pounds and I can close the #3 but I am not even close to crush soda cans. Do you guys use a special technique to crush cans or just raw strength ? ( my guess is that I lack sufficient strength to crush the cans ).
strongmitts
Strong Man, congrats on your can breaking sucess! 2strong, I have no doubt in my mind that you have the strength to crush cans. Technique is a big part of it. Go in the movie gallery and watch videos of John Wood, Rick Walker, and Big Steve crushing cans. You will pop one shortly after. Try several short pulses as opposed to one big squeeze.
Strong Man
oh yes technique is almost everything, but i like crushing a can tech. like close a gripping with 2 hands
kerbjr
2-strong you are plenty strong enough to crush a can, I only bench 350 and can barely close a #2 but can crush the heck outta cans. The tech I use is to clasp my fingers together and squeeze the bottom half of the can ( the bottom of the can is against my clapsed fingers) I use mainly my chest and squeeze like thunder. short pulses dont always work for me sometimes I have to squeeze for several seconds.... also warm cans blow easier than cold ones. All cans are not born equal, even cans of the same brand, some just seem to break eaiser than others. 1 more tip use diet 7-up or sprite cause they arnt sticky. Stick with it you will get one....Brett
Jeff T
Dag, Perhaps your problem comes from not being able to wrap enough of your hands around the can, that could really stop you putting full force into it. Maybe try a thinner can and let us know the results? Jeff
SilentDude
Some people brace there elbows or elbow on there knee. Which in a way is not pure hand strength, and somtiems might be considered cheating. Edited September 23, 2003 by ssj50matrix
2strong
Thanks for the tips ! I tried to pop a 7-up can today. The only thing I managed to do, was to make several small holes in the can and the soda was pouring out of them ( but no "explosion" ). PS. Is it the top of the can that is supposed to brake or is it the side of the can ?? Here is a picture of Norwegian Strongman... Roy Holte crushing a can ( he is also a CoC )... http://home.nktv.no/~dagroye/fsm/fsm.jpg Edited September 23, 2003 by 2strong
Guest chips
Kerbjr,,, Are you putting the base of the can in your palm? It sound as if that would make it more difficult. And yeah, clear dietr soda is the best;. No stains and your not sending out a welcome mat for a million ants.

( I have been trying to blow the top off... Like Roy Holte does in the picture ).

kerbjr
actually the base of the can goes against my clapsed fingers, and my palms end up about middle of the can. it is the easiest way for me. most of my cans bust right in the middle, i wear gloves to avoid cuts. when it blows it rips the can right in half. You are getting close when the cans sprout small holes we call them pee-ers, once they have a small hole throw them down cause you lose too much internal pressure to blow them from that point. Also shake the crap out of them prior to squeezing, it increases internal pressure. also sometimes the top and or bottom pop outward prior to explosion, if this happens shake them up more cause you have increased the volume of can and therby decreased inside pressure. sounds like you are close to busting one, I used to get a lot of pee-ers prior to switching to my new grip...good luck and dont give up alot of the time it takes me any where from 1-5 good squeezes to blow one. I didn't manage to blow the top off but the can split in the middle... with a great BANG ! And I spilt soda all over the kitchen and myself. PS. 2strong
You have some huge wrists on you 2Strong! And good job on crushing that can. Thanks, but I think the picture lie ( they look bigger than they are because of my small hands ). Today my work colleague bought a can of soda, just to see me blow it up... This "exercise" is expensive... So it's good to have someone to share the expenses with ! PS. Check out my "video" post to see me crush a can.
