omillar Posted September 11, 2003 Posted September 11, 2003 I received my first grippers today - as soon as I got the box, I opened it up, grabbed the trainer, and found I couldn't even close it! Same thing with the other hand. It was a lot harder than I expected. I read the MOHS book, and re-read a bunch of the messages on these forums, then started working with the grippers. After an hour and a half, I could close the trainer in the right hand, and get to 1/8" away in the left. Looks like it will take a lot of work before I can close the #1, but I think it's going to be fun getting there! I now have a whole lot more admiration now for you guys who can close the 2s and 3s. Thanks to the gripboard and it's members for all the helpful info that's posted here! Ord Quote
Guest xoaxos Posted September 11, 2003 Posted September 11, 2003 hey man, i found this board a couple days ago, and i was quite surprised so many people that trained grip strength i want to get started on the program but i am a little confused... did you get those grips from the KTA program at the top of this forum? or is there somewhere else you ordered it from? congrats on getting #1 and hopefully i'll be on my way soon too Quote
gollan Posted September 11, 2003 Posted September 11, 2003 omillar, for what it is worth, I started out the same way - unable to close the "T" (trainer) at first. This week I'm finishing up my first cycle of KTA and have the #2 down to less than the thickness of a penny from being closed. A lot of the guys here are naturally strong and/or have been training grip for years. I belive that those of us who take up grip training without a naturally strong grip can still reach the same goals, it will just take longer and we will have to endure that much more hard training. You are on the right track with the two books by Brookfield. Good luck. For all the new folks, there is a post about KTA that is a sticky thread at the top of this forum. My advice is to read it before asking any questions. In fact, spend some time reading old posts. On theGripBoard you will get spanked for asking questions that are already answered in old posts . Finally, to get you started here are a couple of gripper manufacturers and their brand names (there are others). Use the search function to get more info: IronMind (brand Captains of Crush) Warren Tetting (brand BeefBuilder) Quote
mobsterone Posted September 11, 2003 Posted September 11, 2003 Others to look for include Lemley, Robert Baraban and Heavy Grips. Quote Steve Gardener, British 2006/2008/2009/2010 champ, 117.5kg 2HP, Euro 2008 & 2010 champ
Guest gripmaster316 Posted September 11, 2003 Posted September 11, 2003 The grippers are very hard. I remember closing the #1 the day I got them. The #2 however was a different story. Quote
Clay Edgin Posted September 11, 2003 Posted September 11, 2003 I too was surprised how hard my grippers were at first, but now those hard ones are just toys Quote
Jonathan McMillan Posted September 11, 2003 Posted September 11, 2003 Congrats on a great purchase!! At first the sharp knurling on the handles with bother you but as you strive to close harder grippers you'll appreciate that non slippery surface!!! Jon@han Quote 2007 goal: get a #3 shut
omillar Posted September 11, 2003 Author Posted September 11, 2003 Thanks all for the encouragement! It's nice to know that some others also found the "T" hard at first. Jonathan - I do find the knurling is a little rough on my hands, but I kinda like it. It hurts just enough to makes me feel like I'm really doing some work. Quote
