Clay Edgin
I went to the gym today during my lunch break and hit my year end goal in the deadlift - 500lbs! I loaded up 315 and pulled a few reps, which felt like the bar was empty. Then I slapped on another 45 per side and pulled that with ease. I put on 490 total, which would have been a PR, and pulled it quickly, so I loaded the bar up to 500 even and pulled probably the smoothest deadlift of my life. It's funny, but back in January when I started lifting, my max deadlift was 365 for one horribly painful rep. The bar even slipped from my hands a bit. Today, I had an iron fist wrapped around that bar. I could have held that finishing position for a solid 20 seconds. And when I do lockouts in a rack, I can hang on to 600+ I've heard people say that grip strength is one thing that you can't see on a person's body. Now I understand it. To my knowledge, my hands and wrists haven't increased in size, but the tendons in them have apparently grown. Yay grip strength. Now I'm shooting for a double bodyweight pull (appx 560 pounds). Then it will go to 600, then who knows...

strongmitts
I've heard people say that grip strength is one thing that you can't see on a person's body. I've never heard anyone say this, but I know exactly what you are talking about. I know from experience when the grip is weak form breaks down. For example, when lifter friend of mine, who is a 700lb deadlifter, picks up a max weight like 170lbs in the two hands pinch the back may start to round and the legs shake. Jedd Johnson
How's that hand injury you had? Sounds like it's back to normal, eh? What did you do to bring it back?
Digdogz
I've heard people say that grip strength is one thing that you can't see on a person's body. I agree absolutley! When starting my attack on the #2 I had a big friend, six four and heavy+big paws, who could get it straight down to the final millimetres. He has been away for a bit of time and now he's back I challanged him to a go, I was equal to him, if not closer, and if I keep it up I'll get there before him We're talking Laurel and Hardy when it comes to our comparison yet that grip hidden inside me is something that will allow me to 'fool' many a man...... ....mind you, as my father said, theres always one man better than the next. I shan't say anymore as action etc... Digz.

Clay Edgin
Thanks guys. Yeah, the hand is healing nicely, although I still feel a twinge of mild pain when I squeeze a hard gripper. But other than the occasional gripper squeeze, it hasn't hurt in a looong time. I took Rick Walker's advice and did lots of reps with my Trainer and kept the circulation flowing by putting my hand in hot and cold water. Jake Brooks
You have to respect a man deadlifting on his lunchbreak! Nice job, 500 is a big barrier. Once grip is taken out of the equation the sky is the limit with deadlifting. Jake
Sybersnott
Clay.... was that done with a thick bar?? Good job on the 500 pound lift bro! What's your next goal? What can you one-hand lift?

Clay Edgin
Sybersnott, no that was done on an Olympic bar. I'm really focusing on hitting at least 560 by the end of the year, and when I do that then I'll work on those thick bar deadlifts. Pulling 500 on a 3" bar would be awesome... terminator
Pulling 500 on a 3" bar would be awesome... I've seen someone do 510, turn his head around and smile. Not much smiling on the 540 though........
amaury
I've seen someone do 510, turn his head around and smile. Not much smiling on the 540 though........ We haven't seen it cuz someone thinks it is not impressive ! Maybe if Steve had been closing a BBE with his teeth while pulling we would have seen it ?? Bwah ! Just kiddin... BTW Pat what kind of weights do you use on the basic lifts ? I'm sure you're quite strong (particularly for your weight). Just curious ! Thanks, Amaury
